HYDROGEN SULPHIDE

 Is a highly poisonous gas which results as a by-

product of the decomposition of
animal, vegetable and organic material in the
absence of oxygen.

 H2S is a colorless gas with an offensive stench

and is said to smell like rotten eggs.

 The gas can be detected at a level of 2 ppb

HYDROGEN SULPHIDE

 Hydrogen sulphide ( H₂S ) is heavier than air.

H₂S Specific Gravity is 1.189.
Liquid Density ( at Boiling point ) is 914.9 kg/mᶟ.
Gas Density ( at boiling point ) is 1.93 kg/mᶟ.
 H₂S is a poison that can paralyze your breathing system and KILL you in
minutes. Even in small amounts, it is dangerous to your health.
 H₂S means that each molecule of gas is made up of two hydrogen atoms
and one sulfur atom.
 H₂S is water and oil soluble.
HYDROGEN SULPHIDE
H₂S is explosive.

Will ignite and explode when subject to spark or ordinary flame

in concentration from 4.3% - 44.0% of the air.
It is 7 times more flammable than Gasoline.
Burn with a blue flame and will produce Sulphur Dioxide ( SO₂ ).
Odor of rotten eggs in low concentration it deaden the sense of
smell.
Highly corrosive to certain metals.

On-Job Control Requirement
Detected H₂S concentration in air Control Requirement
• Work is permitted without additional control for
H₂S.
• “ BUDDY SYSTEM” is mandatory.
No potential presence of H₂S
Respiratory Protection
Work is permitted without respiratory protection with
consideration to minimize exposure time to ALARP.

0 to 5 ppm Detection
H₂S concentration shall be continuously monitored by
a designated person within the group ( representing
exposure ) for the duration of work period by using a
personal gas monitor.
Emergency Response
Each personnel shall carry their own individual escape
set/mask
On-Job Control Requirement
Detected H₂S concentration in air Control Requirement
• Access to this area shall be strictly limited to
essential staff only.
• Standby personnel and “ BUDDY SYSTEM” are
mandatory
5 to 50 ppm
Respiratory Protection
• When continuous monitoring of H₂S levels exceed
5ppm.work is permitted only with usage of positive
pressure supplied air breathing apparatus (SABA) or
a self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA )

Detection
• All personnel to wear a personal continuous H₂S
monitor.

Emergency Response

• All personnel using supplied air breathing

apparatus shall have an integrated escape tank
attached for emergency escape.
On-Job Control Requirement
Detected H₂S concentration in air Control Requirement
When continuous monitoring of H₂S exceeds 50ppm:

Apply STOP WORK order

More than 50 ppm Entry for work is not allowed except for rescue.

“BUDDY SYSTEM” is mandatory for the rescuer.

In the event of rescue, a stand-by SCBA equipped

person should be nearby in a safe area.
