SCIENCE 6

WEEK 8 DAY 4
OBJECTIV
E:
Describe techniques in separating
mixtures such as decantation,
evaporation, filtering, sieving, and
using magnets.
Worksheets on Filtration,
Evaporation, Distillation
and
Decantation
There are various methods of
separating mixtures that are
commonly found in the
surroundings.
Background Knowledge:

Distillation is the process by which a mixture is separated

by heating a solution and
condensing using a cooling tube. It is a process of
separating liquids from a solution. It
is used in producing pure water, distilled water, or ethanol.
Pure water can be obtained
from seawater. Water can be separated from salty water by
simple distillation.
Distillation works in obtaining pure water from seawater
because the water evaporates from solution and is then
cooled and condensed into a separate container. The salt
stays because it
does not evaporate. Most homogenous solutions can be
separated by distillation.
Instructions: The illustration below shows the steps in
distillation process. Observe
and understand, then answer the following questions.
(3 points each)
Process of distillation:

•The mixture is heated. (1-2)

•The ingredient with the lowest boiling point evaporates. (3)
•The hot vapor travels through the Liebig condenser where it is
condenses. (4)
•Continually running water through the condenser keeps it cool. (5
water outlet and 6 water inlet)
•The distillate is then collected. (7-8)
Questions:
