SCIENCE 6

WEEK 8 DAY 1
OBJECTIV
E:
Describe techniques in separating
mixtures such as decantation,
evaporation, filtering, sieving, and
using magnets.
Worksheets on Filtration,
Evaporation, Distillation
and
Decantation
There are various methods of
separating mixtures that are
commonly found in the
surroundings.
•Filtration is a process of separating solid
substances from a liquid through the use of
filter paper or any cloth that can be used as a
filtering medium. This solid residue are
trapped by the filter paper or cloth, which
allows the liquid substances to pass through in
the process.
Set A.
Directions: Identify what components can be separated through filtration. Put a
check mark (/) on the space provided if it can be separated and (x) if not. Write your
answer on your Science activity notebook.

1. Sand and water - ___________

2. Milk from grated coconut - _______
3. Soy sauce and vinegar - __________
4. Mongo seeds soaked in water - ______
5. Coffee grounds and water - _____
Activity 2: Separate us

Materials:
Muddy water
Filter paper/cloth
2 clean containers
String
Instructions:

1. Pour some muddy water into a

container. Separate soil from water
using the
method of filtration.
2. Follow the steps below:

a. Prepare a filter paper/cloth (large cloth preferably made of

finely-woven cotton). Fold the cloth at least four times so
that there are multiple layers of fabric, and place this over
the mouth of the container. Fasten the cloth securely around
the rim of the opening, using string.

b. Slowly pour the mixture (muddy water) through the cloth,

into the container.
c. Observe.

1. What kind of mixture do you have?

On rainy days, drinking water
sometimes become muddy/dirty.
What will happen if this water
will not be filtered properly?
Explain your answer.
Why is the size of
the holes in a
filter important
for filtration?
Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if
it is wrong. If the statement is FALSE, underline the word(s) that
make it wrong and give the correct answer. Write your answer on
your Science activity notebook.

Example: Salt solution is separated through

filtration.

Answer: False - Evaporation

1. Evaporation is the process of which water
changes from liquid to gas or vapor.
2. In a salt solution, water remains in the container
after the evaporation process.
3. Salt making makes use of filtration to separate
salt from seawater.
4. The evaporation of water is a physical change.
5. Evaporation is when water freezes.
