Applications of optical fibres

CONTENTS
• Image Transmission

• Endoscopes

• Medical appliances

• Military applications

• Fibre optic sensors

• Local area network(LAN)

Illumination Image Transmission
Coherent bundle :
• Optical fibres can be bundled together in a fashion such that orders of
the fibres at the both ends are identical. Such a fibre bundle is called
coherent bundle.

• In a coherent bundle, the fibers are arranged so that images, as well as

illumination, can be transmitted
Incoherent bundle :

• Optical fibres can be bundled together in a fashion such that orders

of the fibres at the both ends are not identical. Such a fibre bundle is
called incoherent bundle

• In a incoherent bundle, the fibers are arranged so that

illumination(transmitting light), can be transmitted
Endoscopes
• An endoscope is an optical instrument which facilitates visual
inspection of internal parts of a human body. It is also called a
fibrescope,.

• It requires about 10,000 fibres forming a bundle of 1mm diameter

Fibre optic sensors

The fibre optic sensors are transducers, which

generally consist of light source coupled with an
optical fibre and a light detector held at receiver end.

• These sensors are used to sense some quantities

like temperature, pressure , vibrations,
displacement, rotations.

• Its advantages are : they are lighter, occupy lesser

volume and are cheaper.
Medical Applications
• In ophthalmology, a laser beam guided by optical fibres is used to
reattach detached retina and to correct defective vision.

• In cardiology, optical energy transmitted through a optical fibre is

used to evaporate built-up plaque that is blocking an artery.

• In the treatment of cancer also the optical fibre technology is used.

The process involves injection of special chemicals that penetrate
only the cancerous cells. Infra red energy is transmitted via the fibre
illuminates the affected area and is absorbed by the special chemical
in the cancerous cells. The heat generated destroys the cancerous
cells.
In-class Activity

Invite parents to take part in an activity, and then discuss it. Some ideas include:

• Solving a math problem, such as estimating the number of beans in a jar.

• Writing an encouraging letter to their child.

• Going on a classroom scavenger hunt for their child's work, the books their
child likes best, and messages from their child.
Handouts
• Translate handouts for parents for whom English is a second
language.

• Handouts might include:

o A list of school phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and Web site
addresses.
o Copies of classroom and school policies.
o A list of materials that children will need for class.
