THE FUTURE

OF THE BRITISH
MONARCHY
THE DEATH OF QUEEN
ELIZABETH II
• On 8 September 2022, Elizabeth II, Queen of the
United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth
realms, and the longest-reigning British monarch,
died of old age at Balmoral Castle in
Aberdeenshire, Scotland, at the age of 96.
• The Queen's state funeral on 19 September was
the first held in Britain since that of Winston
Churchill in 1965.
• She was succeeded by her eldest son, Charles III.
KING CHARLES III

• Charles III, formerly called Prince Charles, formerly in

full Charles Philip Arthur George, prince of Wales and earl of
Chester, duke of Cornwall, duke of Rothesay, earl of Carrick
and Baron Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great
Steward of Scotland, (born November 14, 1948, Buckingham
Palace, London, England), king of the United Kingdom of
Great Britain and Northern Ireland from September 8, 2022. He
is the eldest child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, duke
of Edinburgh.
• The coronation of Charles III and his wife, Camilla,
as king and queen of the United Kingdom and the
other Commonwealth realms is scheduled to take place on
Saturday, 6 May 2023, at Westminster Abbey.
WHAT KIND OF CHANGES HAS BEEN MADE?

• The British Monarchy remained as a constitutional monarchy. This means that, while The Sovereign is Head of
State, the ability to make and pass legislation resides with an elected Parliament.
• the King made a declaration to uphold the constitutional government and - in line with a tradition dating from
the early 18th Century - he made an oath to preserve the Church of Scotland.
• Camilla, the former Duchess of Cornwall became Queen consort.
• William, Prince of Wales, became the heir apparent to the British throne. His oldest son George is second in line
to the throne because European titles are passed down and not across.
• Charles has appointed two new prime ministers; Rishi Sunak as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 25
October 2022 and Chris Hipkins as Prime Minister of New Zealand on 25 January 2023.
REPUBLICANISM IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

• Republicanism in the United Kingdom is the political movement that seeks to replace the United
Kingdom's monarchy with a republic. Supporters of the movement, called republicans, support
alternative forms of governance to a monarchy, such as an elected head of state.
• According to polls done in the recent years young british people want to ditch the monarchy.
• Young people in Britain no longer think the country should keep the monarchy and more now
want an elected head of state, with their mood souring over the last couple of years.
• Even though the majority of the young people in Britain favor the republicanism in the United
Kingdom, Republicanism isn’t a strong force by itself and the monarchy is still stronger so it is
unlikely for the foreseeable future that the monarchy wil be abolished.
