Density

• The density, of a substance is its mass per unit volume.

• The density of a pure substance is dependent on the
size and arrangement of atoms in that substance
• Every substance has a specific density
Effects of Density

• Objects that are denser than water sinks

• Objects that are less dense than water floats
Buoyant Force
• Buoyant force is the upward force a
fluid exerts on an object.
Density and Buoyant force

• When the weight of the object is greater than the

buoyant force ,the object will sink
• If the object’s weight is equal to buoyant force, the
object will sink nor float
• If the weight of the object is smaller than the buoyant
force, the object will float
• By making an object displace more fluid, the
buoyant force on it must increased
• The buoyant force depends on the density of the
fluid. The denser the fluid the greater the buoyant
force that it can exert
• A less dense fluid, like air, provides smaller
buoyant force
Archimedes Principle:
• An object in a fluid experiences a buoyant force that is equal to the weight
of the fluid it displaces
