NATURAL
DISASTER
Natural disaster are catastrophic
events with atmospheric, geological
and hydrological origins. That can
cause fatalities, property damage and
social environment disruption.
For example - Tsunami , Volcanoes,
Cyclone, Flood.
Our topic is VOLCANOES.
So, let us talk about it.
VOLCANO AND VOLCANIC ERUPTION
• An opening or crack on the surface of the
Earth through which magma, ash and hot
gases come out is called volcano.
• A volcanic eruption is the process during
which magma, gas, and other volcanic
materials are expelled from a volcano's vent
or crater.
• The molten rock beneath the Earth's surface
is called magma.
• When magma reaches the surface, it
becomes lava.
• The opening through which lava is pushed
up to the surface of the Earth is called a
vent.
EFFECTS OF ERUPTION
• Volcanoes cause a lot of destruction as well
as air pollution .
• Lava can travel very far and can burn
anything in its path including people ,
houses and tree.
• Breathing problems and skin irritation take
place due to the ash and fog of the volcano.

• Volcanic eruptions also create changes

in weather conditions .
• An erupting volcano can trigger
tsunamis, earthquake , mud flows and
rock falls.
PRECAUTION OF ERUPTION
• Stay inside if possible , with windows and
doors closed.
• Wear long – sleeved shirts and long pants.
• Use goggles to protect your eyes .
• Exposure to ash can harm your health,
particully the respiratory tract.
• Keep your car or truck engine switched off.
DISASTER OF VOLCANOES
Mount Vesuvius, Campania, Italy. The last eruption ,
held on 17th March 1944. The eruption destroyed
the Roman cities of Pompeii , Stablae etc.

Krakatoa, Indonesia, 1883 was one of the most powerful in

recorded history. Series of massive explosions heard
thousands of kilometers away and caused a tsunami that
killed tens of thousands of people. The eruption also had a
global climatic impact, causing temperature drops worldwide

Mount St . Helen, Skamania County, Washington.

During the past 4,000 years, Mount St. Helen has
erupted more frequently than any other volcano.
Interesting Facts
• Volcanoes are named after the Roman god of fire “VULCAN”
• There are around 1500 active volcanoes on earth and most of these
are located in “Ring of Fire”.
• 75% of volcanoes are found underwater. Most of which are located
around the Pacific Ocean.
• The formation of most of the earth’s surface is due to volcanic
activity
• The Mauna Loa is earth’s biggest volcano
• The tallest volcano in the solar system is not on earth! It’s on Mars.
Olympian Mons is 27 kilometers tall and measures 550 kilometers
across.
• There are approximately 10 to 20 volcanic eruptions per day on
Earth.
• The only rock in the world that can float in water is a volcanic
stone, known as a pumice stone.
Recap
• Volcanoes are natural geological features where molten rock, ash, and gases
can erupt from the Earth's crust.
• The Ring of Fire, a region in the Pacific Ocean basin, is known for its high
volcanic activity.
• Eruptions can release gases, ash, and lava, posing risks to the environment,
aviation, and human settlements.
• Volcanoes can also enrich soil and create new landforms, providing both
challenges and benefits.
• Volcanoes are dynamic geological features that play a significant role in
shaping our planet's landscape.
