CHAPTER 9: MEASUREMENT

Lesson 1:

Elapsed Time
Learning Outcomes:
at the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

01 Find the elapsed time in hours,

minutes and seconds
and,
02 Solve problems involving elapsed
time.
Lesson 1: Elapsed Time

The study of time and how to convert one

unit to the other is very important over
young children as it is often used in
everyday life.
Lesson 1: Elapsed Time
Conversion from one unit to another:
1 hour (h) = 60
mins(min)
1 min = 60 seconds (s)
Let’s try:

1.2h= min

2.3 ¼ h = min

3. 6 min= sec
Elapsed Time:
To calculate elapsed time,
simply subtract time started
from time ended.
Hour Minute

Time ended 8 16

Time 7 45

Hour Minute Hour Minute

Lesson 2;
Speed, Distance, Time

at the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

• calculate speed, distance, and time

• Solve problems involving speed
Lesson 2;
Speed, Distance, Time

Distance, speed/rate and time are three

important concepts in mathematics,
which usually encounter as a
word problems.
Lesson 2;
Speed, Distance, Time

Distance- is the length measured between two

points or the length of space travelled by a moving object.
It is usually denoted by d in math problems. Most
common unit being used to measure distance is kilometers
or meters.
Lesson 2;
Speed, Distance, Time

Time- is the measured or

Speed/ rate- is the speed at
measurable period during which
which an object or person travels.
a condition, process or action
We usually say, the bus runs 60
exists or takes place. It is usually
kilometres per hour (kph).
expressed in hours or minutes.
Remember!

Distance = Speed x Time

Time = Distance Speed
Speed = Distance Time
Let’s TRY!
Problem:
Rhyne travels at a speed of 60 kph.
At the same rate, how long will it
take him to cover a 240 km
distance?
Let’s TRY!
Given facts Solution:
t=
s = 60 kph t=
d = 240 km
t= 4h
t=?
Lesson 5;
AREA
Lesson 5: AREA
To find the area of a
rectangle, we simply multiply
its length and width while that
of a square is the square of its
side.
Area of a Rectangle= Length Width or lw

w=3

l=5

A = lw
=5 3
=15 sq units
Area of a Square = side side or s²

s=4

A = s²
= 4²
= 16 sq units
Area of Parallelograms
A = base height or bh
A= b h
= 10 8 h=8
= 80 sq units

b=10
Area of Triangles
A= ½ (base height) or ½ bh
h= 5

A= ½ bh
=½ 8 5
= ½ 40 b= 8
= 20 sq units
Area of Trapezoids
A = ½ (base1 + base2) height or ½ (b1+b2)h
b1 = 6
A= ½ (b1+b2) h
= ½ (4+6) 3
= ½ (10) 3
= 15cm²

h= 3

B2= 6
Area of Circles
Base of the Parallelogram (b) = Half of the circumference of the
Circle (c) or b = r
Height of Parallelogram (h) = Radius of the Circle (r) or A= bh
We know that the formula to find area of parallelogram is A = bh

To find the area of the circle, substitute r for b and r for h in the
above area formula. A = r r
A = r²
A= r² 7m

= 3.141 x 7²
=3.141 x 49
=153. 909 m²
Lesson 6;
SURFACE AREA
The surface area of a solid object
is a measure of the total area that the
surface of the object occupies.
Surface Area of a Cube
It is easy to visualize the surface area of a cube since we
already know that is has six square faces which are all
congruent. It means that we simply solve the area of one face
and multiply the result by 6. 4cm

Surface Area of a Cube = 6s²

SA of a Cube = 6s²
= 6 4²
= 6 16
= 96 sq cm
Surface Area of a Rectangle Prism
To find the surface area of a rectangular prism, we need
the measure of the length, width and height.

4cm

SA = 2(lw+wh+lh)
6cm 3cm
