Questions
What are
Human rights?
• Human rights are rights inherent
to all human beings, regardless of
race, sex, nationality, ethnicity,
language, religion, or any other
status.
• Human rights include the right to
life and liberty, freedom from
slavery and torture, freedom of
opinion and expression, the right
to work and education, and many
more.
• Everyone is entitled to these rights,
without discrimination.
Mahatma Gandhi

World civil rights leaders—from

Martin Luther King, Jr. to Nelson
Mandela—have credited Gandhi as a
source of inspiration in their struggles
to achieve equal rights for their people.
“We stand today at the threshold of a great event both in the life of
Eleanor Roosevelt the United Nations and in the life of mankind. This Declaration may
well become the international Magna Carta for all men everywhere.”
Nelson Mandela
I have fought against white
domination, and I have fought against
black domination. I have cherished the
ideal of a democratic and free society
in which all persons live together in
harmony and with equal opportunities.
It is an ideal which I hope to live for
and to achieve. But if need be, it is an
ideal for which I am prepared to die.
Dr. Martin King is an icon of the civil rights movement. His life and work symbolize
the quest for equality and nondiscrimination that lies at the heart of the
Luther King, Jr. American—and human—dream.
