Two Types of Roots
Tap Roots

Taproots grow deep

into the soil toward
Earth’s center due to
gravity. Taproots take
in water and nutrients
from the soil. The
roots also store food
made by the plant.
Tap Roots examples

Carrots Dandelion Turnip

Fibrous Roots
Fibrous roots of the
same plant are all about
the same size. They
grow longer than
taproots. Fibrous roots
also grow close to the
surface to take in water
after it rains.
Fibrous Roots examples:

White Clover Grass

Green Onion
Two Different
Kinds of Stems
Underground
Stem can store the food
that the plant
makes. They are
usually full of
nutrients. Many of
them can be stored
in cool places for a
long time
Cactus stems swell
up to store
water. Cactus stem
s are thick
and waxy. This kee
ps them
from losing water. C
actus stems
help them survive in
a desert.
