Module Selecting Measuring

Kinds of Measuring Instruments
A carpenter must know how to select appropriate measuring tools for the job to
accurately measure materials and angles and layout structures. U.S customary measuring
tools used in carpentry are divided into inches and halves, quarters, eights and sixteenths of
an inch. However, on metric tools, the divisions generally are centimeters and millimeters.

1. Push- pull rule is used to measure long distances

available from 3.00m to 7.5 meters long.

2. Zigzag rule is available from (4ft) 1.20m to (6ft)

1.80m commonly used by carpenters for rough layout.

3. Extension rule is used for measuring inside distances

such as room, windows, cabinets, etc.

4. Caliper is used for measuring outside diameter of cylindrical

objects.
