Out with the old, In with the
new ?

Old? New? one thing is common-

both generations are fascinated with
the unfamiliarity of either the old or
the new. it must be noted that the
internet and other technologies are
products of various elements that
were conceptualized during the “ old
times”- text, audio, video, and
images.
New Media is YouMedia

Today, youth has a high

involvement in newer kinds of media.
You are no longer a receiver of
content; you are also a creator of
content.
Lievrouw and Livingstone (2002)
define new media as a link between
information communication
technologies and social contexts
such as practices and uses. In other
words, new media is about
connectivity, access to other new
media users, interactivity, ubiquity,
delocatedness, and diffusion.
New Media may refer to any of the
following typology:

*** Applications that can be

characterized as mass media and yet
employ newer features that none on
traditional.
*** Internet activities: online
journalism, digital advertising, online
broadcasts, online communities and
discussion sites, the world wide web,
search engines.

*** Electronic mesaging ( e-mail ),

online gaming.
Main Categories of New media

1) Interpersonal communication
media- characterized by mobile
telephony and e-mail-contents are
private and perishable.
2) Interactive play media- includes
computer- based devices, video
games, and virtual reality.
3) Information search media-

telephony, broadcast telephony,
broadcast teletext, and radio data
services.
4) Collective participatory media-
involve the use of internet for
sharing and exchanging information,
ideas, and experiences ( computer-
mediated ).
Telecommunication

As defined by Serafica
( 2001 ), it pertains to the process
of relaying and transmitting
messages .
Example : voice, data, and electronic
information thru written, oral,
pictorial, audiovisual or any other
forms that are sent as signals thru
various means such as wire, radio,
elctromagnetic, spectral, or optical.
Example in the application of
telecommunication during disasters,
it is used by the government in
informing the people of whatever will
strike,hence reducing the risk and
number of casualties.
Activity:

1) For you, is traditional media dead?

In what aspects or areas do
traditional media beats new media?

2) Do you believe in the idea that “

there is plenty of informstation out
there, but thre is a scarcity of
knowledge”? why do you say so?
3) What is the role of
