Natural Disasters

Natural Disasters and the Developing

Nations
By Mibsaam Ahmed
• A report by the United Nation found that from
1994-2014, 4.4 billion people were affected by
natural disasters. It also found that developing
countries are much more affected by
developing nations than developed countries.
While only one-third of the natural disasters
during this period occurred in developing
countries, more than 80% of the victims
belonged to these countries.
How Buildings are affected

• The buildings can be vulnerable to natural

disasters because people live in areas at high
risk from natural disasters the housing is
poorly built and can be easily damaged in the
event of a disaster, these buildings if affected
by the natural disasters can also be a factor of
deaths. There is also no protection from these
disasters.
How people are affected

• Cities are mostly overcrowded. These disasters

can cause injuries and deaths as there isn’t
good protection for people, no emergency
services, no evacuation plan or any sort of
guidance and help. Some people might get
displaced or get separated from their families
and due to lack off or no rescue teams and
authorities millions of people get displaced.
Health Services
• Due to under development and lack of facilities,
health care is very hard to get and its also really
hard for the health care to reach people as
there is no arrangement for these services and
due to many people needing these services it is
very hard for them to reach every person in
time and the demand of health care items can’t
be met with it because it will be rarely available
and not freely accessible to everyone
Supplies
• The supply of food, water, electricity and
medicine is unreliable and they will be
scarcely available due to the disasters as the
city will mostly be destroyed with little to no
supplies and there will be no way to provide
people with these supplies due to no
emergency supplies and it will almost be no
possible way for transportation of these
supplies.
Government Funds
• The Government of these countries are not
financially stable and can’t provide the
country and authorities with sufficient funds
to make stronger buildings locate people or
provide with supplies and also can’t afford to
recover the damage caused by natural
disasters and are unable to help the people in
need.
