THE NORTH

By; Heledy Almanzar & Lisbeth Cabrera

The English North, a loosely defined area that experiences and
expresses the tension between imagined and constructed identities.
Dissident narratives from the North provide critical perspectives on
the formation of a nation based on the
dominant Englishness of the South East and offer alternative
trajectories for understanding English modernity.
Popular travel literature often ignored or transformed the
North. Southern cultural hegemony operated in various ways,
turning the northern territories into a binary opposite to the
achieved identity of royal England. Even socialist writers
such as Robert Blatchford contributed to the hierarchical
view of national progress, emphasizing the aesthetic ideal of
'home counties' over industrialized areas such as Wigan or
Cradley.
