The ratio of the number of P. gingivalis to the number of total bacteria did not show any statistically
significant difference between the test and control groups at any time point (Table 4).
Discussion:
1. According to Park et al microbiological count of P.gingivalis is statistically
significant 1 month after the treatment with EPAP but after 3 months.
One possible reason for these differences between the studies could be
variations in the prevalence of deep pockets.
2. There was a significant reduction in both PPD and BOP at all time points
compared to baseline, inter-group comparison did not show any
statistically significant differences.
3. The adjunct use of air-flow treatment does not provide any additional
benefit in teeth with furcation involvement.
4. Findings in the study are in accordance with those of other clinical
studies where erythritol or glycine powder was used as a monotherapy in
SPT and compared with conventional subgingival instrumentation
CONCLUSION AND LIMITATIONS
Conclusion :
The results of the present study indicate that the adjunct use of subgingival
airflow therapy with erythritol powder in combination with conventional
subgingival debridement during initial non-surgical periodontal therapy in
patients with Stages 2 and 3 periodontitis overall has no adjuvant effect on the
clinical and microbiological parameters; however, it might provide some
clinical benefits in the treatment of initially deep pockets (PPD ≥ 5.5 mm).
