Energy Demands
DO NOW:
1. Identify the non-renewable energy resources from the list. Write
them in your book:
wind, oil, solar, gas, nuclear, tidal
2. Write down as many energy resources as you can

Describe how a power station generates electricity

Explain how the following are used as fuels: fossil fuels, biofuels and
nuclear fuels.
Compare the use of fossil fuels and nuclear fuels in terms of energy
provided, waste and pollution.
Model Answer
Renewable Non-Renewable
Wind Oil
Solar Nuclear
Tidal
Key terms: Renewable vs. Reliable
A renewable resource is one that can be replenished as it is used.
A non-renewable resource is finite (limited amount) and can not be
replenished.

A reliable resource is one that works transfers energy 24 hours a day,

every day.
An efficient resource is one that works transfers a high proportion of
input energy into useful output energy.
Think, Pair, Share:
What are the 3 most popular reasons people use energy?
Main Uses of Energy Resources
The main uses of energy resources are:

Generating
Transport Heating
Electricity
How does a power station generate electricity?

How does a power station generate electricity?
Annotate your diagram to describe the key stages.

1. Burning fuel heats water in a boiler.

2. The steam makes a turbine spin.
3. The turbine turns an electricity generator.
4. electricity goes to the transformers to produce the
correct voltage.
Three fuels are used:

Fossil fuels Nuclear fuel Biofuels

Advantages of Renewable
• They will never run out because they are always being
replaced
• They do not produce:
• Greenhouse gases
• Acid rain
• They do not create radioactive waste products
• They can be used where connection to the National grid
is not possible
• Road signs
• In remote areas
