Aims &
By the end of the session you should be
able to:
1. Know what we mean by ratio.
2. Simplify ratio to simplest form.
3. Use direct proportion to increase or decrease
quantities.
4. Work with simple ratio and direct proportions.

A ratio is used to compare two or more quantities.
We write the quantities together with a colon (:) between them.

Example:
What is the ratio of green diamonds to purple diamonds?

There are 5 green diamonds and 4 purple diamonds.

The question asked for the ratio of green to purple.
The ratio is 5:4 (‘five to four’).

Direct P

Two quantities are in direct proportion if the ratio stays the same as
the quantities increase or decrease.

Example:
In a cake recipe, when the number of people doubles, the amount of flour also doubles,
so the number of people and the amount of flour stay in direct proportion.

To double the amount, multiply everything by 2.

To make half the amount, divide everything by 2
To make five times as much, multiply everything by 5.
To make a third, divide everything by 3. 3
A&O
rop o rt i o n s
Direct P
Example:
A recipe for four people takes 300 grams of flour and 100 grams of sugar.
How many grams of flour and how many grams of sugar would be needed if the same
recipe is followed to feed:

8 people=? 2 people=? 20 people=?

8 is double 4 2 is half of 4 20 is five times 4
 so double the amount  so halve the amount of flour:  so multiply the amount of flour
of flour: 300 ÷ 2 = 150 by 5:
300 × 2 = 600  so halve the amount of sugar: 300 × 5 = 1500
 so double the amount 100 ÷ 2 = 50  so multiply the amount of sugar
of sugar: by 5:
100 × 2 = 200 For 2 people we need 150g of 100 × 5 = 500
For 8 people we need flour and 50g of sugar. For 20 people we need 1500g of
600g of flour and flour and 500g of sugar.
200g of sugar.

Work with ratio an
1 part orange squash with 4 parts water (1:4)

Case 1: Case 2:
How much water should you mix with How much squash should you mix with
50ml of orange squash? 500ml of water?
• Orange squash 1 part = 50ml • Water 4 part = 500ml
• Water 4 parts = 4 × 50 = 200ml • Orange squash 1 parts = 500 ÷ 4 = 125ml
We need 200ml of water. We need 125ml of orange squash.

Case 3:
How much water and how much orange squash do you need to make 1 litre (1000ml) of
diluted orange squash?
1. The ratio is 1:4
2. Find the total number of parts: 1 part orange squash + 4 parts water = 5 parts diluted
orange squash.
3. Divide to find one part: These 5 parts need to make 1000ml, so 1 part is: 1000 ÷ 5 = 200ml
4. Amount of orange squash: 1 part = 200ml
5. Amount of water: 4 part = 200 × 4 = 800ml
A&O 4
We need 200ml orange squash and 800ml water.
