Let’s try!

Write T if the statement is

True, F if otherwise. Write your
answer in your notebook.
Research involves
finding possible
answers to
questions.
Research is carried
out to explain a
situation or
phenomenon.
Research is a discipline or
process for experts only.
Surveying is data
gathering.
Only new knowledge
can be considered
research.
Research happens
only in a
laboratory.
Research
improves
life.
The end result of
research is lies or
falsehood.
Rice cookers can be
considered as the
output of research.
We better
understand our
humanity with
research.
What is
Research?
Etymologically, research came from
“re” and “search”. "Re" is a prefix
that means again and search is a
word that means to look for.
Therefore, research is to look for
something (Chapman 1979).
There are two (2) things that we need to
take note of in this definition.
First, research is not only about the
discovery of something
unknown, it is coming up with a new
explanation of something that is known.

Second, research is a process. It is a process

of searching for something to solve an
existing problem or difficulty to solve.
Research is also understood as a
systematic investigation or inquiry
entailing the collection of data,
documentation of critical information,
analysis, and interpretation of
information (Williams 2007).
The term systematic
entails the structure.
Research as systematic means it
follows the structure or method.
Therefore, whenever collecting data,
documenting information, analyzing,
and interpreting information is
conducted, a particular method is used.
Research can be also viewed
as the formation of new
knowledge and the
employment of previous or
existing knowledge in a new
and creative way
(O’Donnell 2012).
Imagine these two (2) scenarios:

Mother giving birth to a baby

and
A potter molding a pot.
Identify the word that is
being described in each
sentence. Write your
answers on
your notebook.
It is conducted if someone
wants to know something. It
starts with the letter
“R” and ends with the letter
“H”.
It stands for an action when
someone follows structures or
order in conducting
research. It starts with the
letter “s” and ends with the
letter “c”.
The term represents something that
someone can get after finishing a
research. It consists of two words. The
longest word starts with the letter “k”
and ends with the letter “e”.
It happens when somebody wants to
answer questions or inquiries. The
longest word starts with the letter “c”
and ends with the letter “n”. Further,
the word in the middle is a preposition.
It happens when someone wants to
answer something. It starts with
the
letter “p” and ends with the
letter “m”.
This word refers to an act when
someone seeks to inquire about
a question. It starts with the
letter “a” and ends with the
letter “r”.
Researchers do this with the
help of experts. It can be on
one or with the
group. It starts with the letter
“I”.
The word refers to an action when
you read articles and other
materials to
know more about what you are
searching for. It starts with the
letter “r” and ends
in “w”.
It refers to observation,
survey, or Interview. This
word starts with the letter
“I” and ends with the letter
“n”.
It stands for an action to answer
queries, understand problems seek
new
knowledge or based on existing
knowledge in a new and creative
way. It
starts with the letter “r”.

Activity 1
Lets Recall!!
Directions: Read the sentences. Say
YES if you think that the sentence is
true about research. Say NO if you
think that it is not.
1. Research begins
with a problem.
2. Research is merely
gathering information.
3. Research is
transporting facts from
one place to another.
4. Research is rummaging
around for hard-to-locate
information.
5. Research is a creative and
systematic work undertaken to
get additional information.
Knowledge of research is important
to students because it helps in
having a detailed analysis of things.
When one has proper in-depth
analysis of any topic, the result
comes out fruitful.

NATURE OF INQUIRY

1. Inquiry is defined as “a seeking for truth, information or

knowledge”. It is a problem-solving technique.
2. The information and data pursued through questioning
begins with gathering by applying the different human
senses.
3. Individuals carry on the process of inquiry from birth till
death.
4. Inquiry is synonymous with the word investigation
DIFFERENTIATE INQUIRY FROM RESEARCH

Inquiry is a term that is synonymous with the word

‘investigation’. When you inquire or investigate, you tend to
ask questions to probe or examine something to request
truth, information, or knowledge.

Research is the systematic and objective creation of

knowledge (with a system or method, the scientific method),
objective (no bias, all angles presented), knowledge creation
(a creative process)
PURPOSE OF RESEARCH

1.To inform action.

2.To prove or generate a theory.
3.To augment knowledge in a field or
study.
IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH IN DAILY LIFE
1.Research directs us to inquire about the right information by
conducting further investigation of the actual condition. It leads
us to be cautious in giving results and findings by proving lies
and supporting the truth.
2.Research empowers us with knowledge and discovers new
things and issues in life. It helps us solve problems in health,
crime, business, technology, and the environment.
3.Research facilitates learning as an opportunity to share valuable
information with others as a way of recognizing various
concerns for public awareness.
Lifestyle Lounge also lists down seven importance of
research. It says that “contrary to popular belief research
need not only pertain to science.” Research is important
in all spheres of life. (“Importance of Research,“ 2017)
Research is important:
1. to gather necessary information
2. to make changes
3. to improve standard of living
4. to have a safer life
5. to know the truth
6. to explore our history
7. to understand the arts
Task 1: Paint Me a Picture
Directions: On a long bond paper,
illustrate concrete situation/s in your daily
activities that show/s the importance of
