PURPOSES OF KKO-5 OXYGEN SYSTEM

 Determined to use on high altitude combat

airplanes
 Designed to protect the pilot against high-altitude
sickness by providing required amount of oxygen
both in normal & emergency situation

January 17, 2024 8

AMOUNT
________________________________________________________

• Total Bottles : 06
• Bottle Capacity : (4x4, 2x2) Ltr= 20
Ltr
• O2 Pressure : 130-150 Kg/cm2

• Emergency Bottle : 01 (with each seat)

• Bottle Capacity : o.7 Ltr (each
Bottle)
• Emergency O2 Pressure : 150 Kg/cm2
January 17, 2024 9
CONSTRUCTION
________________________________________________________

• The O2 system is divided into 2 CCT:

– High Pressure CCT
– Low Pressure CCT
• Each pilot is supplied by a separated pressure line
• The lines are interconnected so that the O2 from one
system may be used in the other one

HIGH PRESSURE O2 SYSTEM
________________________________________________________

The HP O2 system consists of:

• O2 Cylinders
• Check Valves
• Pressure Reducer
• Indicators

HIGH PRESSURE O2 SYSTEM
________________________________________________________

O2 CYLINDERS
• Four O2 cylinders (Bottle type) with 4 liters each &
two cylinders (balloon type) with 2 liters each
• In the nose section 2 Bottle type cylinders at the left
& the front balloon type cylinder are dedicated for
the front cockpit & 2 bottle type cylinders at the
right & the rear balloon type cylinder are dedicated
for the rear cockpit

CHECK VALVES
• Six T-piece non-return valves are installed in the HP
part of the O2 system to prevent back flow of the O2

HIGH PRESSURE O2 SYSTEM
________________________________________________________

PRESSURE REDUCER
• There are Two stages of Pressure Reducer:
o
1st Stage Reducer (KR-26)
o
2nd Stage Reducer (RPK-52)
• 1st stage reducer reduces the O2 pressure to 10±2
kg/cm2
• 2nd stage reducer reduces the pressure to 2.6-3.7
kg/cm2

HIGH PRESSURE O2 SYSTEM
________________________________________________________

O2 INDICATOR/ GAUGE
• One O2 gauge is located on the forward left
console in each cockpit to indicate the
pressure of the HP O2 system
• The scale is graduated from 0-160 bars
• Normal system pressure is between 30 & 150
bars
• The flow indicator is in the lower part of the
instrument
• The front cockpit is also provided with a
helmet pressure indicator by the left side of
HP O2 gauge
January 17, 2024 16
LOW PRESSURE O2 SYSTEM
________________________________________________________

• The low pressure O2 system consists mainly of The

Dilutor Demand Regulator
• The dilutor demand regulator provides an O2 air
mixture in proportion to a given altitude
• It carries the following controls to operate the
system
– O2 shut off Valves
– Dilutor demand sw
– Emergency sw
– Flow Indicator

January 17, 2024 17

LOW PRESSURE O2 SYSTEM
________________________________________________________

O2 SHUT OFF VALVES

• The O2 shut off valve has the positions ‘CLOSED’ &

‘OPENED’
• The valve when turned CCW opens the O2 supply
system

January 17, 2024 18

LOW PRESSURE O2 SYSTEM
________________________________________________________

DILUTOR DEMAND SW

• It has the positions ‘100%’ & ‘MIXTURE’

• In the ‘MIXTURE’ position, an air-O2 mixture is
provided by the regulator depending on flight
altitude
• In the ‘100% ‘position, pure O2 is delivered

January 17, 2024 19

LOW PRESSURE O2 SYSTEM
________________________________________________________

EMERGENCY SW

• The red background sw has the positions ‘OFF’ &

‘ON’
• For normal operation the sw is set to ‘OFF’
• In the ‘ON’ position, the oxygen-air mixture is
delivered with pressure to the O2 mask,
depending on cabin altitude

January 17, 2024 20

LOW PRESSURE O2 SYSTEM
________________________________________________________

FLOW INDICATOR

• It is provided to indicate proper O2 flow

• During normal operation the blinker indicates a
double Butterfly white flags & blank when inhaling
• In the emergency ‘ON’ position, the blinker
indicates open/white flags disappearing

EMERGENCY O2 SYSTEM
________________________________________________________

• The emergency O2 container is located in the

parachute seat pack & actuated automatically upon
seat ejection
• It can also be actuated manually in the cockpit
through a red knob attached to the ORK-9, when
the normal system fails
• The emergency O2 container is charged with 0.7 ltr
of O2 at a pressure of 150 bars
• A built in pressure gauge permits checking of the
pressure
• It provides O2 for 10 minutes
January 17, 2024 24
EMERGENCY O2 SYSTEM
________________________________________________________

• The rear cockpit is provided with an interconnect

valve on the left console behind the O2 shut off
valve
• The valve is closed CW during normal operation
• During SOLO flights or when the O2 in the front
cockpit is depleted, the shut off valve is opened
CCW allowing the pilot in the front cockpit to
breathe O2 from the rear O2 bottle through
interconnection

January 17, 2024 25

OPERATION
________________________________________________________

• Normal Operation:
o
O2 Shut off valve - Open (CCW)
o
Dilutor Demand Sw - Mixture
o
Emergency Sw - Off

• Emergency Operation:
(If symptoms of Hypoxia are suspected)
o
Dilutor Demand Sw - 100%
o
Emergency Sw - On
