Low and High

Biodiversity
REVIEW

 What are the two components of an

ecosystem?

Give examples for each component.

ELICIT
Among different ecosystems, the rainforest has the
highest biodiversity. This means that it has the greatest
number of species living in it. Rainforests have a high
rainfall, thus, have lots of plants in them. This condition
provides shelter, water and food to many species that can
survive drought or disasters as well as competition with
other species. This results to a stable ecosystem with
lesser rate of species loss. Tropical rainforests are located
in places near the equator, while temperate rainforests
are found in the temperate regions.
ENGAGE
Based on the discussion above, how will you
describe an ecosystem with low biodiversity?

It has a single or few number of species.

Learning Competencies

Explain the advantage of high biodiversity in maintaining the stability of an

ecosystem (S8LT-lVh-21)

Objectives:

At the end of the period, 85% of the students are expected to:

1. differentiate low from high biodiversity,

2. give advantages of high over low biodiversity,
3. identify ecosystems with low and high biodiversity, and
4. predict what will happen to an ecosystem with low biodiversity.

Activity I. High and Low

Directions. Study the pictures below and answer the questions that follow. Write the answer on your answer sheet.
Questions:

1. What are the biotic components found in each picture?

A. ____________________________________
B. ____________________________________

2. Which of the pictures show high and low biodiversity? Why?

High biodiversity _________________________
Low biodiversity _________________________
EXPLAIN
Guide Questions

1. What would be the economic advantage of a region with high biodiversity compared to
other region with low biodiversity?

2. How does an increase in biodiversity influence balance in an ecosystem?

3. How does high biodiversity help in maintaining the stability of an ecosystem?

4. Why is high biodiversity advantageous over low biodiversity in maintaining the stability
of an ecosystem?
GENERALIZATION

Think of the biodiversity in your community at present.

What would it look like in the future?
ASSESSMENT
A. Identify the picture whether it is a low or high biodiversity .

1. Tubbataha Reef 2. Coconut Plantation

B. T or F: write T if the statement is correct and F if not.

3. High biodiversity has more kind of organisms present in it.

4. An ecosystem with low biodiversity has a greater help because it increases ecosystem
productivity.
ASSIGNMENT

 What are your responsibilities towards biodiversity for a

sustained supply of food and other resources for all
organisms?
 What actions must you take to protect and conserve
biodiversity?
 If some of the abundant species present thirty or fifty years
ago in your community are lesser now or have disappeared,
what would the future look like for these organisms?
