GLOBAL WARMING
FROM FOSSIL FUELS
• Global warming is the long-term heating of Earth's
surface observed since the pre-industrial period
(between 1850 and 1900) due to human activities,
primarily fossil fuel burning, which increases heat-
trapping greenhouse gas levels in Earth's atmosphere.
This term is not interchangeable with the term
"climate change."
LET’S LEARN
ABOUT GLOBAL
WARMING FROM
FOSSIL FUELS
FIRST OF ALL LETS LEARN ABOUT
FOSSIL FUELS
• Fossil fuels are made from
decomposing plants and animals.
These fuels are found in the Earth's crust
and contain carbon and hydrogen, which
can be burned for energy. Coal, oil, and
natural gas are examples of fossil fuels.
EXAMPLES OF FOSSIL FUELS
GLOBAL WARMING FROM FOSSIL FUELS
• What is the link between fossil fuels and climate change? When
fossil fuels are burned, they release large amounts of carbon
dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into the air. Greenhouse gases trap heat
in our atmosphere, causing global warming. Already the average
global temperature has increased by 1C.

• In addition to releasing planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions,

burning fossil fuels also generates localized air pollutants — such as
soot and smog (ozone) — that increase the risk of death from stroke,
heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory illness among those
exposed.
DO WE EXPERIENCE IT IN OUR
COUNTRY?
• Yes because, Impacts of climate change in the Philippines
are immense, including: annual losses in GDP, changes in
rainfall patterns and distribution, droughts, threats to
biodiversity and food security, sea level rise, public
health risks, and endangerment of vulnerable groups such
as women and indigenous people.
JUST A FACT
DON’T LOSE OF TRACK
 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Defined
GDP measures the monetary value of goods and services produced
within a country's borders in a given time period, usually a quarter or a
year.
 If nothing is done, climate change will impose substantial
economic and human costs, reducing GDP by as much as 13.6
percent of GDP by 2040, with the poorest households most
affected.
JUST A FACT
DON’T LOSE OF TRACK
 Biodiversity is all the different kinds of life you'll
find in one area—the variety of animals, plants,
fungi, and even microorganisms like bacteria that
make up our natural world. Each of these species
and organisms work together in ecosystems, like
an intricate web, to maintain balance and support
life.
HOW TO PREVENT GLOBAL
WARMING FROM FOSSIL FUELS
•Conserve Energy
Air pollution from energy production leads to acid rain, excess greenhouse
gases, and health risks. One important step you can take to minimize
airborne nutrient pollution is to conserve energy. You can do this by:

• Turning off lights, computers, televisions, video games and other

electrical equipment when you're not using them.
• Buying equipment that uses less electricity, including lights, air
conditioners, heaters, refrigerators and washing machines.
Energy Star-certified products and buildings use at least 10 less
energy than standard models.

• Limiting the use of air conditioning.

• Installing a programmable thermostat.
