EARTH AND

LIFE SCIENCE

WEEK1
LESSON 2
THE
SUBSYSTEMS
OF THE EARTH
LORNA V. BERTULANO, RN,
MAN, LPT
OBJECTIVES:
1. determine the four subsystems of the Earth;
2. describe the characteristics of each
subsystem;
3. trace the flow of matter and energy in the
Earth’s subsystems;
4. express one’s internalized role as steward of
the four subsystems concerning the flow of
matter and energy.
Activity #1

Watch the video presentation provided. List down

what made up the Earth. Categorized them based on
the following:

AIR WATER LAND WITH

LIFE
EARTH
SUBSYSTEMS
The Earth has four subsystems
called the geosphere, hydrosphere,
biosphere and atmosphere.Because
these subsystems interact with each
other, they work together to influence
the climate, trigger geological processes,
and affect life all over the Earth.
Hydrosphere

 Ocean – the most prominent feature of

the hydrosphere.
It is about 97% of Earth’s water .
 Also includes fresh water found in
streams, lakes, and glaciers, as well as
that found underground
glaciers- 1.8 %
ground water - 0.63%
atmosphere - 0.001%
streams and lakes - 0.01%
Biosphere
Bio is a Greek root that means life. The
biosphere is comprised of all living things.
 It includes all microbes, plants, and animals.
It extend to the upper areas of the atmosphere
where insects and birds can be found.
 It also reaches the deep parts of the oceans
where marine organisms can still survive.
GEOSPHERE
The geosphere makes up the
solid portion of the Earth, it's
structure and land.
Geosphere came from a greek
root Geo which means ground.
It includes all the soil, rocks,
and minerals present in the
crust to the core of the Earth.
It is divided into three layers
namely crust, mantle, and
core.
ATMOSPHERE

The word atmosphere

comes from the Greek
roots atmos which means
gas, and sphaira which
means globe or ball.
the atmosphere makes up of all the
gases on Earth.
It extends outward about 10,000 km
from the surface of the Earth.
It is composed of nitrogen, oxygen,
argon, carbon dioxide and other
components.
 The atmosphere has different layers-
troposphere,stratosphere,mesosphere,therm
osphere, and exosphere.
1. the troposphere extends to about 14.5km
above the Earth's surface. It is the lowest
layer where the weathers forms.
2. the stratosphere is found 14.5 to 50 km
above the Earth's surface. The ozone layer
that protects the Earth from the Sun's
harmful UV radiation is found in this layer.
3. The mesosphere extends from 50 to
85km above the Earth's surface. It
protects the Earth from the impact of
space debris.
4. The thermosphere is found 85 to
600 km above the Earth's surface. It
has charged particles that are affected
by the Earth's magnetic field.
5. The exosphere is the farthest
layer. It extends to about 10,000
km above the Earth's surface.
ACTIVITY 2 :
The humAn population has increased rapidly
since the 1700’s. For most of human history,
there were fewer tan half-billion people on
Earth. In mid-2009, 6.7 billion people
inhabited our planet. Because of these,
extensive pollution is everywhere. As a
student, what can you do to save not only a
particular system, but the Earth itself?

Activity 3. We are Connected (p.16)

According to John Muir, “When one tugs at
a single thing in nature, he finds it attached
to the rest of the world.” How is the given
diagram related to the said quote? How
does the four subsystem of the Earth
connect with each other?
