Literature- Derived from the Latin
litteratura meaning "writing formed
with letters," literature is most
commonly refers to works of the
creative imagination, including poetry,
drama, fiction, nonfiction,
journalism, and in some instances,
song.

⚫A GENRE is a particular type of
literature, painting, music, film,
or other art form which people
consider as a class because it has
special characteristics.

⚫A written stories about


people and events that
are not real: literature
that tell stories which
are imagined by the
writer.
Elements of Fiction
• Character- Person in a work of fiction/ characteristics of a person
(protagonist/ antagonist).
• Setting- refers to place, time, weather condition, and even mood
or atmosphere.
• Point of view- How the character is told- more specifically who
tells it?
• Plot- It is the sequence of events in a story or a play.
• Theme- the central dominating idea.
• Voice and dialogue- this is how speech is rendered in a story,
either as the narrator talking to the reader, or the characters
talking to each other’s.
Drama

Is a composition in prose form that


presents a story entirely told in a dialogue
and action and written with the intention
of its eventual performance before an
audience.
Elements of Drama
• Plot- The events in play.
• Setting-Time and place of a literary work.
• Characters- People or creatures in a play.
• Dialogue- conversation in a play.
• Theme- The central thought of a play; the idea or
ideas with which a play deals.
• POINT OF VIEW- refers to who is telling a story, or
who is narrating it. The narration of a story or
novel can be told in three main ways: first person,
second person, and third person.
Poetry
⚫Prose that resembles a
poem in some respect, as in
vivid imagery or rhythmic
sound.
Elements of Poetry
• METER- in poetry means the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables
found in a poem.
• STANZA- Stanzas refer to series of lines grouped together and separated
by a space from other stanzas.
• LINES- A line is a subdivision of a poem, specifically a group of words
arranged into a row that ends for a reason other than the right-hand
margin.
• RHYME- The word “rhyme” refers to the pattern of similar sounding
words used in writing.
• Rhythm- a regular pattern of sounds or movements.
• TONE- Overall impression the poem makes

NONFICTION
⚫The branch of literature
comprising works of narrative
prose dealing with or offering
opinions or conjectures upon
facts and reality, including

idea.
⚫Narrated from point of view, or
perspective of the author, who is a
real person.
⚫Nonfiction presents facts or
discusses concepts.

the time period, including
