TALIESIN WEST

 TALIESIN means ‘Shining Brow’


 TALIESIN WEST is built at the brow of the hill to preserve
the natural shape of the hill
 Wright was 72yrs old when he built TALIESIN WEST
 Was designed to house wright’s winter home, studio and
architectural apprenticeship program
 He used local and site provided material for construction
supporting organic architecture
 Usonian style and organic architecture
 Some Asian influence can be seen
CONCEPT & CONSTRUCTION

 The concept and architecture style came from wright’s fascination for idea of self- sufficient community
working amidst nature
 Perfect example of union of Architecture and Nature
 The earlier construction(1938-1941) were Wright’s office, Drafting studio, kitchen and dining room, the
living quarters, garden room, ‘kiva’ theatre, rooms for assistants, a small bell tower and workshops
 In following decades (until Wright’s death), TALIESIN WEST was repeatedly modified
 Additions like new dining facility, cabaret theatre, a music pavilion, new workshops, few rooms
 The furniture was designed by Wright and his students

 Construction material, Desert masonry, used, made by o LOCALLY AVAILABLE COLORED ROCKS AND SAND USED

 Maximum use of natural light


 Interior spaces illuminated through orientation
of building and roof openings covered with
white canvas( later replaced with translucent
acrylic sheets)
 Low levels horizontal planes to insure natural
ventilation and shade from intense desert sun

 LIVING AND WORK SPACES OPEN TO NATURE WITH
