What causes waves

Waves are most commonly caused by friction as the wind blows over the surface of the sea. They can also be
formed by earthquakes, underwater landslides or volcanic eruptions. These events are rare but can lead to a
tsunami.

In deep water, waves seem to move forward; but the seawater is not moving with them. Each particle of the
water moves around in a circular pattern, whenever a wave passes.
