What is Educational
technology?
Educational technology is a term used to describe a wide array of
teaching-and-learning–related software and hardware that’s
increasingly being used in college and university classrooms. Also
referred to as EdTech, is to enable an improved learning
environment, which in turn is meant to boost student outcomes. It
has also been proven to increase student engagement and
participation in class.

By using educational technology, educators can create digital,

interactive textbooks, gamify lessons, take attendance, assign
homework, hold quizzes and tests and get real time results related to
teaching material, style and format. Educational technology is
disrupting traditional education and teaching methods by offering
both teachers and students the ability to learn in an environment that
makes use of now-common devices such as smartphones, laptops
and tablets.
A short history
● Educational technology in way could be traced back to the emergence
of very early tools, e.g., paintings on cave walls. But usually, its
history is made to start with educational film (1900's) or Sidney
Pressey's mechanical teaching machines in the 1920’.
● First large-scale usage of new technologies can be traced to US WWII
training of soldiers through training films and other mediated
materials. > Today, presentation-based technology, based on the idea
that people can learn contents trough visual reception, exists in many
forms, e.g., streaming audio and video, PowerPoint presentations +
voice-over.
● Digitized communication and networking in education started in the
mid 80s and became popular by the mid-90's, in particular through the
World-Wide Web (WWW), email and Forums. There is a difference
between two major forms of online learning. The earlier type, based on
either Computer Based Training (CBT) or Computer-based learning
(CBL), focused on the interaction between the student and computer
drills plus tutorials on one hand or micro-worlds and simulations on
the other. Both can be delivered today over the WWW.
● Today, the prevailing paradigm in the regular school system is
Computer-mediated communication (CMC), where the primary form
of interaction is between students and instructors, mediated by the
computer. CBT/CBL usually means individualized (self-study)
learning, while CMC involves teacher/tutor facilitation and requires
scenarization of flexible learning activities.
● In addition, modern ICT provides education with tools for sustaining
learning communities and associated knowledge management tasks. It
also provides tools for student and curriculum management.
Here are some major EdTech
buzzwords to know:
E-learning :
Is a mode of learning that takes place electronically, often via the Internet. It requires
students to use electronic, although often students use institutional devices too. With
e-learning, students theoretically can learn any time or place, as long as they have
access to a device and a Wi-Fi. e-learning can encapsulate students’ courses,
assessments and grades.

Blended Learning :
Blended learning refers to a course of study that combines online and live and/or in-
person learning. The distinguisher between online learning and blended learning is
that blended learning must involve live discussions or lectures, whereas online
learning can be completely asynchronous.

Distance Learning
Distance learning refers to students who take courses without physically sitting in a
classroom on campus where courses are being taught. Distance learning can take the
form of hybrid learning, fully-online learning.

Hybrid Learning
Hybrid learning is an educational model where some students join class in-person
while others join remotely. Hybrid learning can combine synchronous learning with
asynchronous learning elements like online forums, discussion boards, and other
pieces of digital content.

Instructional Technology
Instructional technology is a field that creates classroom technology tools to assist in
instruction and learning. It covers the software and hardware needed to make
instruction as easy and dynamic as possible for teachers and students.
Here are some major EdTech
buzzwords to know:
Virtual Classroom
A virtual classroom is an online room where students attending a virtual class learn and
ask questions. It lets everyone hear or see the others that are there, and answer
questions as they come up. It brings the benefits of a physical classroom online. Think
of a virtual classroom as the object of fully remote learning. When you are engaging in
fully remote learning, you are participating in a virtual classroom.

Webinar
A webinar is a presentation focused on a specific topic that is hosted and attended
virtually. Attendees can sign up ahead of time and are taken to a digital lecture where
slides, video, or other multimedia will be presented. These are done with the help of
video conferencing technology and software and can be either synchronous or
asynchronous, depending on if the webinar in question is live or pre-recorded

Goals
Educational technology research always had an ambitious agenda. Sometimes it only
aims at increased efficiency or effectiveness of current practice, but frequently it aims at
pedagogical change. While it can be considered as a design science it also addresses
fundamental issues of learning, teaching and social organization and therefore makes use
of the full range of modern social science and life sciences methodology.

"Technology provides us with powerful tools to try out different designs, so that instead
of theories of education, we may begin to develop a science of education. But it cannot
be an analytic science like physics or psychology; rather it must be a design science
more like aeronautics or artificial intelligence. For example, in aeronautics the goal is to
elucidate how different designs contribute to lift, drag maneuverability, etc. Similarly, a
design science of education must determine how different designs of learning
environments contribute to learning, cooperation, motivation, etc." (Collins, 1992:24).

Technology is therefore both a tool and a catalyzer and it can become a medium through
which change can happen.

Benefits
1. It Offers A Wider Choice Of Materials That Can Be Accessed Easily
2. It Helps Improve Learners' Communication Skills And Performance In School And
Workplace Settings
3. It Provides A Fun And Engaging Learning Experience For Students
4. It Allows Learners To Access The Internet From Anywhere At Any Time
5. It Helps Learners Learn New Skills And Acquire New Knowledge
6. It Allows Students To Improve Themselves Both Mentally And Physically
7. It Helps Learners Stay Up To Date With New Technological Advancements

Challenges
1. Budget Limitations
2. Lack Of Professional Training
3. Poor Network Infrastructure
4. Resistance To Change
5. No Systems In Place To Utilize Technology In Curriculum
7. Administrators Don’t See The Need For More Technology
Opinions
Baumgartner & Kalz (2004) distinguished three major teaching forms. This
framework was then used to evaluate functionality of technology. It also can be
be used to categorize online teaching practice.

Moore (1989) distinguishes three types of interaction in distance education and

that also can be useful to categorize educational technologies:
1. Student-content interaction refers to Courseware oriented activities, e.g.,
reading texts, working with interactive multimedia, produce assignments.
2. Student-instructor interaction refers to all things related to tutoring
3. Student-student interaction refers to all kinds of collaborative learning
Conclusion

EdTech allows greater communication, resource sharing, and improved

practice so that the vision is owned by all and dedicated to helping
every individual in the system improve learning for students. It is a
time of great possibility and progress for the use of technology to
support learning.
Happy Learning!!
