This project shed light on the progress and journey of developments in Urban areas
understudy, which are Planned and Unplanned.

The areas understudy are :

● Baprola (or Bapraula) is a census town on the outskirts of Najafgarh in the
National Capital Territory of Delhi.

Delhi.
● The Jat-dominated town is situated in the South West Delhi district.
● It is best known as the home of the double Olympic medalist wrestler Sushil
Kumar. Apart from this, Baprola is known as the home of the district president of
BJP- Vijay Solanki.
● Haryanvi is the most spoken dialect in the village along with Hindi.
Baprola

Rationale

● The areas understudy are well-fitted for planned and

unplanned Urban area.

● The social environment of these areas clearly shed light on

their establishment process.

● Both areas are free to explore and has friendly

neighbourhood.
Investigation
The areas understudy clearly shows us the progress/development been
done there over past years. Our investigation is mainly focused on the
concern of housing and structure because in our opinion it is the key
factor of distinction between planned and unplanned area.

While keeping our focus on development, we would also scrutinize the

political effect on these areas. This factor not only affect the development
process but also environment and livelihood of people there.
Methodology
● Explore our area on the internet.
● Survey in neighbourhood:
○ Motive:
■ To know about the history of our neighbourhood
■ Population study
■ Knowing issues they face regarding the neighbourhood

● Interview of any politically related individual. (if possible)

○ Motive:
■ How politics affect the development of an area.
■ Opinion on why is the neighbourhood the way it is today?
■ If they can go back, what would they like to change?

● Collect pictures of the neighbourhood: Past and Present.

● Study manifestos of various parties over the past.
○ Motive:
■ It will give an idea what they think about the neighbourhood.
■ If any change needs to be made or not.

● Studying development done by various winning parties over years.

Interview 1 Interview 2
On the bases of interviews in the Baprola, we have concluded the followings:

● Population of this area was very less in early 2000s.

● Earlier Barola was consider under Outer delhi but later it was included in Delhi and thus the
development took place.
● Currently residents are facing following major issues :
○ No regular water supply from DJB
○ Poor road conditions
■ Poor materials were used to construct these roads
○ No government response yet to the open garbage disposal activities
○ Residents themselves privately constructed sewers in some streets
○ No regular MCD garbage collector vans

● Mismanagement and wrong acts of residents:

○ Residents throw garbages in open plots.
○ Some people occupy 2,3 feets of gali for there personal use by making chabutras
○ Owners of lifted houses constructed ramps in front which makes street road uneven

Similarities Differences

Development

● Power supply is regular in both Areas. ● Condition of Roads are better in

vikaspuri
● Government sewer lines in vikaspuri
● Water supply is regular in vikaspuri

Social

● Maximum people do private jobs or ● Jat dominance in baprola

have own shops. ● Diversity in vikaspuri
● Better economic situation in Vikaspuri
By talking to the several residents of both areas we get to
know:

● Politicians always promise to construct better roads,

sewers in Unplanned area while no major promises
were made in Planned area.

● They oftenly celebrate particular eve with enthusiast in

Unplanned area like Chhath, while no such enthusiasm
was seen in Planned area.
But Why?!!
Hypothesis:

1. Politicians intentionally don’t want to fully

develop unplanned area because then what they
will have then to promise?

2. Differences in awareness of residents in both

areas to approach authorities for betterment of
society.
