PLACE

VALUE
Theory and understanding

Welcome, everyone! Today,
we'll delve into an essential
concept in mathematics –
"Place Value."
INTRODUCTION
Place value is the foundation
for understanding numbers,
performing calculations, and
working with larger quantities.
Place value refers to the value
of a digit in a number based on
its position.

WHAT IS
In our decimal system, each
PLACE place represents a power of 10.
VALUE?

The value of a digit is

determined by multiplying it by
the appropriate power of 10.

hundreds, thousands, etc.

Each column has a value 10

times greater than the column
to its right.

UNDERSTANDING THE CHART
Let's take the number 3,768 as an example: Thousands
|Thousands| Hundreds | Tens | Ones

• So, in 3,768, the digit 7 represents 7 hundreds, 6 represents 6 tens, and 8

represents 8 ones.
Expanded Form
• Expanded form breaks down a number into the sum of its place values.
• For 3,768: 3000 + 700 + 60 + 8
• Helps visualize the value of each digit.
ROUNDING AND
ESTIMATING
• Rounding involves approximating a
number to a specific place value.
• E.g., rounding 87.639 to the nearest
tenth gives 87.6. In this case the
number next to our tenth (6) is less than
five (it is just 3), so the tenth (6) stays
the same.
• Rounding 68.7642 to the nearest tenth
gives 68.8, because there is a number
that is equal or higher than five nest to
it (number 6), so we can round or tenth
to next number which is 8.
• Estimating simplifies calculations while
preserving the general magnitude.
APPLICATIONS IN
ARITHMETIC
• Place value is crucial in addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Helps maintain the right positional value
during calculations.
APPLICATIONS
Word Problems
• Real-world scenarios often involve place value.
• E.g., counting money, measuring distances, population estimation.
Advanced Concepts
• Place value extends to decimals and fractions.
• Scientific notation uses place value to express large or small numbers concisely.
Practice Exercises
• Let's engage with some exercises to reinforce our learning:
• Identify the place value of a digit.
• Expand numbers into their place values.
• Construct a place value chart.
• Round numbers to specified places.
• Solve word problems involving place value.
