Special Education

 In this project I used articles from NET. Here links for some of them:

Educating the gifted child | The Good Schools Guide

I also used my own knowledge in this theme and examples of schools from my town.

So let’s start from the question:” Why is the concept of gifted
controversial?”
 Gifted is one of a number of issues in education that causes the blood to stir. For
some, 'gifted' is an elitist concept that beggars definition; others do not see what
all the fuss is about because a gifted child will always do well, won't they? And
while many people might assume it’s a blessing having a gifted child, the reality is
that rapidly grasping what others cannot lead to boredom, frustration and
inappropriate behaviour.

 In all these cases there are challenges for parents,

teachers and the child, who sees conforming
to the norm as a major peer requirement.
Gifted or talented?
In England, the Department for Education (DfE) distinguishes between gifted learners
and talented children:
• Gifted learners are those who have particular academic abilities;
• Talented learners are those who have particular abilities in the creative arts (such
as music, art and design, drama, dance) or PE.
Some schools (and parents) prefer the term ‘more able’ or ‘high ability’ children
because they see these terms as being less elitist and more inclusive, but the term
‘gifted’ is very much part of the official language.
Charles Murray
 At the same time Charles Murray says: “I define the “intellectually gifted” as those
individuals who can stand out in almost any profession. Research indicates an IQ of at least 120
is usually needed to achieve this. This covers the top 10 percent of the IQ distribution, or about
a million people out of Australia’s total labour force.”
 “What I am calling for is a revival of the classical definition of a liberal education, serving its
classic purpose: to prepare an elite to do its duty.”
 So Charles Murray wants to prepare and teach such children much better so that they can
fulfill their “destiny”. And I think that he expresses himself
correctly and puts his opinion. He expressed his opinion back
in August 06, 2007, and since then a lot has really changed.
What can we conclude?
 The education of such children is more difficult in ordinary schools and therefore they need
special education. Charles Murray think that it is very necessary and we must give them more
opportunities and provide good conditions for their development.
 The concept of giftedness can be perceived in different ways.
 This problem still exists, but on a smaller scale that before.
What about our town?
 There are also schools for such children in our city, but there are quite a few of them. A good
example is the Science Lyceum, which is currently the best in the city. But all these institutions
are designed for adult children. Everything is the same in ordinary schools, and we do not have
special kindergartens either. I think this will definitely change in the future. We already have
schools that have certain directions that can guide the child. The Scientific Lyceum has an
informatics and physics and mathematics direction.
