Were you able to understand what the man

said?
In your own opinion, what do you think the
person speaking needs to improve?
PAUSING AND
PHRASING
Pausing is using an interval of time
between words or phrases in sentences.
You pause for a dramatic effect….to let
the listener absorb your information.

Phrasing is the dividing of sentences

into thought groups or phrases.
PAUSING AND PHRASING
(also known as SLOWED SPEECH)
The pausing and phrasing technique affects timing. It
involves teaching a person who stutters (PWS) to pause
briefly at natural points in conversations (e.g. commas,
periods, prepositional phrases). With this technique, the
speaker is capitalizing on the natural flow of speaking to
give the brain time to plan, and the speech machine time
to produce speech without sounding odd.
It’s time to eat Spaghetti.
The boy is going outside.
I went shopping at the mall.
Put the cookies in the oven.
Put your socks on your feet.
Blow out the candles
and make a wish.
Is there any difference between no pausing
and with pausing?
Ways to use pauses in your speech

1. Add emphasis to key points

A pause before, during, after you say something

you wish to emphasize can be a powerful verbal
tool in a presentation.
Today is a day for mourning and remembering. Nancy
and I are pained to the core by the tragedy of the
shuttle challenger.

2. Indicate a change in tone or topic

Pausing between two different parts of your talk

can tell the audience something new is starting.
You can also do this after an introduction or before
a conclusion to help the audience understand the
progression through your speech.

3. Make sentences clear

A brief pause every time your script has a

comma between sections in a list, and a longer
pause when there’s a hard stop to a sentence,
will slow you down and let the audience hear
what you are saying. It also gives them time to
process the information.

4. Distribute eye contact

This again add emphasis to the point you have,

or are just about to make. If the audience is
large, spend 1-2 seconds giving eye contact to
several different areas of the audience before
continuing. This helps keep the audience
engaged and feel involved in the presentation.

5. Let others talk

A brief pause every time your script has a

comma between sections in a list, and a longer
pause when there’s a hard stop to a sentence,
will slow you down and let the audience hear
what you are saying. It also gives them time to
process the information.
HOW IS THIS TECHNIQUE HELPFUL?
 Gives the speaker more control over the overall pace of
communication
 Can reduce the feeling of time pressure to speak, thus
decreasing the feeling of needing to rush their speech
 Decreases speech muscle tension
 Can increase confidence when speaking
 Increases flow of the conversation
 Increases the listener's understanding

South America. They hang on

GROUP 1
Be patient till the last.
Romans, countrymen, and lovers!
hear me for my cause, and be silent, that you may
hear: believe me for mine honour, and have respect
to mine honour, that you may believe: censure me
in your wisdom, and awake your senses, that you
may the better judge.
GROUP 2

If there be any in this assembly, any dear friend of

Caesar's, to him I say, that Brutus' love to Caesar
was no less than his. If then that friend demand
why Brutus rose against Caesar, this is my answer:
Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome
more
GROUP 3

Had you rather Caesar were living and die all slaves,
than that Caesar were dead, to live all free men?
As Caesar loved me, I weep for him; as he was
fortunate, I rejoice at it; as he was valiant, I honour
him: but, as he was ambitious, I slew him. There is
tears for his love; joy for his fortune; honour for his
valour; and death for his ambition.
GROUP 4
Who is here so base that would be a
bondman? If any, speak, for him I have
offended. Who is here so rude that would not
be a Roman? If any speak, for him I have
offended. Who is here so vile that will not love
his country? If any speak, for him I have
offended. I pause for a reply
