Unity is a figurative artwork in acrylic and gold leaf which was created in response to the figurative work of
Henri Matisse. Specifically, his use of the lone figure influenced the simple layout of the piece. Unity aims to
depict the importance of community in a lonely environment. The grey background creates a ‘flat’ feeling to
the piece, while the black silhouette adds graphic weight to the figures, drawing the viewer’s eye. By sparkly
placing gold leaf in the background, a sense of hope is still maintained, despite the stormy, grey
appearance of the rest of the piece. As goes the famous quote “Hope is being able to see that there is light
despite all of the darkness.”
I chose to create Unity because I had a realisation that every person has their own experience, and I
believe that that it the reason why I value having a small community so much. It stems from the idea that we
as people are inherently lonely, however when we find a few people with whom we can share experiences,
we feel less alone.
How well did the artwork meet my intentions?
I initially pictured my artwork to look totally different to my final piece however, I am very glad with
how it has turned out.
What supported the strengths of this?
I love the colour in the background creating the contrast with the people in the front. I equally really
like the pop of colour of the gold to make my piece less dark and gloomy. Really portraying the
message of even in the dark there will always be light.
What could be done differently to further emphasise the intention?
I think that the next time i could have worked a bit more on the shapes of the people.
