Present simple (1)

Vorm: één werkwoord, met of zonder –s

Gebruik

1. Als iets altijd, nooit of regelmatig gebeurt: I always get up at 6 a.m.

John never goes out at the weekend.

2. Als het een feit is: Water boils at 100 degrees Centigrade.

Den Helder lies on the coast.

3. Bij een zintuigelijke waarneming: That sounds great!

It tastes like chicken.

Present simple (2)

Vorm: één werkwoord, met of zonder –s

Gebruik

4. Bij geestelijke staat of een voorkeur: I believe you are wrong.

I hate songs with auto-tune in them.

5. Bij vaste tijden (aankomst, opening, aanvang): Our train leaves at 8.15 in the morning.

The film starts at 21.00 p.m.

6. Na woorden die naar de toekomst verwijzen: Don’t forget to switch it off before you
leave.

I will call you as soon as I am ready.

Present continuous

Vorm: to be + werkwoord + -ing

Gebruik

1. Iets is nu bezig of aan de gang: Jason is working at the supermarket today.

Why are you watching TV at this time of day?

Why aren’t you doing your homework right

now?

2. Als iets in de toekomst is voorbereid: We are going to my grandparents this

weekend.

I’m seeing her on Friday.
