Need of study
 Sewage contains large amount of TDS, organic matter
and nutrients.
 Increased load on domestic wastewater treatment plant
 To propose a low cost treatment technology for domestic
wastewater using wooden waste material

Literature Review
Researcher Research Attempt

using agricultural waste.
Huai Li, Zifang C An innovative woodchip framework substrate used as
(2016) slow release carbon source to treat high strength
nitrogen waste water.
Lide C, Steven H Two stage woodchip base bio filter system to mitigate
(2012) odour from a deep
-pit swine building

5
Scope of study

Use of Whitewood chips as a bio-absorbent

Low cost treatment of domestic wastewater
by using whitewood chips

6
Objective of study

To study physio-chemical characteristics

of wastewater at VJTI boys hostel
To remove dissolved organic matter using
Whitewood chip filter and check its
efficiency for varying detention periods.

7
Sampling
Done with the objective of collecting a
representative sample
Basically depends on types of sample and
sampling method
Type of sample used: Grab sample
Method of Sampling: Manual Sampling

8
Source of Wastewater

Methodology

Domestic

Waste Water
Primary Treatment Effluent Filtration with Water
(settling for 1hr) white woodchips

10
Methodology (Design and general
setup)

11
Experimental Procedure
 Domestic Wastewater Settled For 1Hr.
 Part of the sample obtained is tested for BOD, COD, and
TDS
 Remaining part is passed through the filter media
 Detention time-30 min, 90 min, 180 min

12
Materials used
SAND GRAVEL

WHITE WOOD CHIPS

13
Results
Results were obtained for
BOD,COD,TDS
Graphs were plotted between values
obtained from the results vs varying
retention time

Mechanism of woodchip filtration
process
The bio-absorptive properties of the wood
chip help in dealing with the organic
fraction
The pores and voids in the wood chip
help in dealing with the dissolved
materials in sample

21
Conclusions
Efficiency of white wood chip as a bio-
absorbent was determined
Greater the retention time, greater will be
the efficiency of wood chip filter .
