- The positivity or negativity of a message in
a text can be recognized either through
direct or not direct meanings
- When the words or phrases mean exactly
what they are supposed to mean, we call
them LITERAL.
- when the message is not directly expressed
and departs from the dictionary meaning, we
call the language used FIGURATIVE.
EXAMPLE OF POSITIVE LITERAL WORDS
WORDS: grateful, appreciate, Thanks!
WHEN TO USE: When expressing gratitude
EXAMPLE: Thank you for the paper.

Prefixes like: un- unfriend, im- impossible,
in-incorrect, mis-mishandle, dis-dislike
WHEN TO USE: We use these words as a negative
expression

WORDS: disgust, offend, dismay, shock
WHEN TO USE: when expressing disappointment
EXAMPLE: Patrick’s mom was disgusted by
