Assignment 3
Question 1

Identify the plane group for the following and show all the symmetry elements in the
unit cell of the plane group [5 *4 = 20]

(a) (b)

(c) (d)

Please ignore the rhombic grid lines in patterns © and (d0

Question 2

We have studied that there are only 5 unit cells possible in 2D and in the earlier
course on Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering you studied the 7 crystal
systems and 14 Bravais lattices. In this question,
1. Prove the absence of centered square lattice in 2D unit cell.
2. Find the 3D lattice obtained by stacking of the 2D square lattice (of dimension a)
 on top of each other at a distance a.
 on top of each other at a distance b such that b > a.
 on top of each other separated by a distance of a/2 and shifted by (a/2,
a/2).

3. Prove the absence of base centered cubic lattice.

[5 *3 = 15]
Question 3
We have determined the plane group for graphene in the last assignment. Given below
is an arrangement of three layers of graphene which is repeating along the vertical
direction. Determine the space group of this crystal which is essentially graphite. [10]
Question 4
There are 5 point groups belonging to the cubic symmetry. Provided below is a cube
with m-3m symmetry and another cube with a pattern that has 23 symmetry.
Identify the symmetry for the remaining three cubes. Remember the five point
groups belonging to cubic symmetry are m-3m, 23, 432, -43m and m-3 or 2/m-3.
Remember that the order of symmetry directions for cubic crystal symmetry is
[100]/[010]/[001]; [111]; [110] corresponding to cell edge, body diagonal and face
diagonal. [15]

? ?
