Descriptive Measures

ERIC MATTHEW L. SENERPIDA

Descriptive Measures
• Statistical calculations used to summarize and describe the main
features of a dataset. These measures help to understand the:
• Central tendency, Variability, and distribution of the data.
Measure of Central Tendency or the Averages are
measurements that tell us where the middle of the data
lies. The three most common measures are the;
Mean, Median, and Mode.
MEAN
The arithmetic mean, or simply the mean, is defined as the sum
of the set of observations that is divided by the number of that
particular set of observations

Example:
The numbers of hours spent by 8 students in studying per week were recorded as
follows: 5, 7, 2, 6, 2, 8, 4 and 6. Find the mean
The Weighted Mean
Consider the proper weights assigned to the observed values according to their relative
importance
Example 1
Find the mean grade point average (GPA) of Juan, presented in a frequency table
below.

MEDIAN
It is the middle value of a set of observations arranged in increasing or decreasing
order of magnitude. It is the value of the variable which divides the data under
consideration into two equal parts
MODE
It is the value in the set that occurs most often. A set of data can be bimodal. It
is also possible to have a set of data with no mode.
The measure of variation is a measure that describes how spread out or
scattered a set of data. It is also known as measures of dispersion or
measures of spread.
There are three measures of variation:
The range, the variance, and the standard deviation.
RANGE
The range of a set of data is the difference between the highest and lowest values in the
set.
STANDARD DEVIATION
The Standard Deviation is a measure of how spread out numbers is. It is the square root
of the variance.
VARIANCE
COEFFICIENT OF VARIATION
