CBMEC3 Lesson 3 Descriptive Measures
CBMEC3 Lesson 3 Descriptive Measures
Example:
The numbers of hours spent by 8 students in studying per week were recorded as
follows: 5, 7, 2, 6, 2, 8, 4 and 6. Find the mean
The Weighted Mean
Consider the proper weights assigned to the observed values according to their relative
importance
Example 1
Find the mean grade point average (GPA) of Juan, presented in a frequency table
below.

MEDIAN
It is the middle value of a set of observations arranged in increasing or decreasing
order of magnitude. It is the value of the variable which divides the data under
consideration into two equal parts
MODE
It is the value in the set that occurs most often. A set of data can be bimodal. It
is also possible to have a set of data with no mode.
The measure of variation is a measure that describes how spread out or
scattered a set of data. It is also known as measures of dispersion or
measures of spread.
There are three measures of variation:
The range, the variance, and the standard deviation.
RANGE
The range of a set of data is the difference between the highest and lowest values in the
set.
STANDARD DEVIATION
The Standard Deviation is a measure of how spread out numbers is. It is the square root
of the variance.
VARIANCE
COEFFICIENT OF VARIATION
