HISTORY OF SEBI

 1. SEBI was established by the Government of India in 1988.


 2. It was made a statutory body in the year of 1992.
 3. The main office of SEBI is located in Mumbai.
 4. It has regional offices at Kolkata, Ahmedabad, New Delhi and
Chennai.
 5. It functions under the Ministry of Finance.
FUNCTIONS

 Protecting the interest of investors


The major function of the SEBI is safeguarding the interests of investors, while
educating them about securities markets and their intermediaries. Facilitating the development
and seamless functioning of the securities market. Regulating the business operations within
the securities.

 Prohibiting the fraudulent and unfair trade practices associated with the securities market.
Example- False pricing, late day trading

 Registering and regulating the working of various intermediaries like merchant bankers,
registrars, share transfer agents, stock brokers.
FUNCTIONS

 Registering and regulating the functioning of depositories, custodians and depository participants.

 Registration of Foreign Institutional Investors.

 Registering and regulating the working of venture capital funds, mutual funds and other collective
investment schemes including plantation schemes.

 Promotion and regulation of self regulatory organizations prohibiting fraudulent and unfair trade
practices relating to securities market.

 Prohibiting insider trading in securities.

 Regulating substantial acquisition of shares and takeover of companies .
