SAFEGUARDING ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: AN IMAGE-

BASED PLAGIARISM DETECTION SYSTEM FOR JOSE
RIZAL MEMORIAL STATE UNIVERSITY
INTRODUCTION
• Plagiarism, a persistent issue in academia and professional
settings, threatens academic integrity and intellectual honesty,
with image plagiarism emerging as a modern challenge in the
digital age.
• How can traditional plagiarism detection systems be enhanced to
effectively address the growing concern of image plagiarism in
academic documents?

The ease with which images can be manipulated poses a significant

challenge for traditional text-focused plagiarism detection systems,
necessitating the development of image processing-based systems using
techniques like convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for feature
extraction.

Literature Review

• Image Processing Techniques:

• SIFT (Scale-Invariant Feature Transform), PHash (Perceptual Hashing), and CNNs are
crucial for extracting features from images, playing a vital role in plagiarism detection.
• Approaches to Image Plagiarism Detection:
• Feature-based, hash-based, and hybrid approaches have been proposed, each with unique
strengths and weaknesses in identifying image plagiarism.
• Related Studies:
• Srinivas and Rao (2015) utilized SIFT descriptors and a Siamese network, achieving a
98% accuracy in detecting plagiarized images.
• Barua et al. (2016) employed a hybrid approach combining SIFT descriptors and
perceptual hashing, achieving a 95% accuracy.
Literature Review

• Gaps in Existing Literature:

• Challenges in Heavily Modified Images:
• Existing literature struggles to address the complex task of detecting
plagiarism in heavily modified images, requiring a nuanced understanding
of semantic content.
• Efficiency and Scalability of Systems:
• The computational expense of current systems poses challenges to
scalability, emphasizing the need for more efficient solutions.
• User-Friendly Systems:
• Current systems lack user-friendliness, hindering accessibility for a diverse
range of users, including students, teachers, and researchers.
Methodology
Research Design
Experimental Design:
• This study adopts an experimental design, allowing for an objective
evaluation of the image processing-based plagiarism detection system.

Sampling Strategy and Data Collection:

• Data Collection:
• A comprehensive dataset of images was gathered from diverse sources, including
academic documents, reputable websites, and online image repositories.
• Sampling Strategy:
• Images were preprocessed for consistency, noise removal, and normalization of pixel
intensities.
• Manual labeling classified images as plagiarized or original.
• Data partitioning resulted in two subsets: a training set (70%) for system training and a
test set (30%) for performance evaluation.

IV Research Results
Results

The results of the evaluation showed that the image

processing-based plagiarism detection system was able
to achieve high accuracy in detecting plagiarized
images. The system also had a low rate of false
positives.
Conclusion

The findings of this study suggest that image processing-based plagiarism detection systems are
a promising approach to detecting image plagiarism. The system developed in this study was
able to achieve high accuracy in detecting plagiarized images, even when images had been
modified. Future research should focus on improving the accuracy and efficiency of these
systems, as well as making them more user-friendly.
