Lesson Components
Overview
INTERVENTION CAMP
⮚ offers a second-chance to acquire
fundamental
students skills through an interesting and
challenging program designed for students around
achievable learning targets on what can be
described as basic/fundamental skill development in
both numeracy and literacy.
The Materials
• Grades 7 and 8 Lesson Plans

• Notes to Teachers for Grades 7 and 8

• Grades 7 and 8 Student Workbook

The Materials
Structure of the Lesson

Lesson Component 1 (Lesson Short Review)

Lesson Component 2 (Lesson Purpose/Intention)
Lesson Component 3: Speed Challenge
Lesson Component 4: Speed Questions
Lesson Component 5: Worksheets
Lesson Component 6: Frenzies
Lesson Component 7: Game
Structure of the Lesson
Lesson Component 1 (Lesson Short Review)
(5 minutes)

Subject content review to

⮚ determine learners’ background knowledge and
skills
⮚ determine learners’ level of knowledge
Structure of the Lesson
Lesson Component 2 (Lesson Purpose/Intention)
(5 minutes)
A description of the purpose of the lesson
Language: Review words and phrases
relevant to the lesson.
Structure of the Lesson
Lesson Component 3: Speed Challenge (3 minutes)
Students, in groups of 2-3, attempt to answer as
many flash cards as they can in 1 minute (with the
goal of 30 or more) for the number facts set(s), with up
to 2 attempts per student. Students graph the number
incorrect and correct in their workbooks. Teacher
assists students needing additional support.
Structure of the Lesson
Lesson Component 4: Speed Questions (5 minutes)
Students answer in 2 minutes questions on
operation and a few inverse operation on the
number facts set(s). Questions are marked by
the students after the 2 minutes.
Structure of the Lesson
Lesson Component 5: Worksheets (10 minutes)

The students work on a puzzle and

activity sheet for the facts.
Teacher number moves and
around
assists those the additional
needing room support.
Structure of the Lesson
Lesson Component 6: Frenzies (Operation Squares)
(5 minutes)
This consolidates learning. Students
fill in as many facts as they can in 4
minutes, then they mark their answers.
Structure of the Lesson
Lesson Component 7: Game (5
minutes) (1st or 2nd lesson in the day)
The class plays a Bingo game related to the
number fact set. Students create their unique grid by
selecting and placing 9 numbers from the list and
cross off the numbers if they answer a question posed
by the teacher until there is a winner.
Structure of the Lesson
Lesson Component 7: Game (5 minutes)
The class plays a Bingo game related to the
number fact set. Students create their unique grid by
selecting and placing 9 numbers from the list, and
cross off the numbers if they answer a question posed
by the teacher, until there is a winner.
Structure of the Lesson
Lesson Component 7: Conclusion (5 minutes)
(3rd lesson in the day)
Conclusion: Reflection and Wrap Up
Teachers encourage students to reflect
and report on the day’s lessons and meeting
goals regarding the number fact sets.
Progression of Lessons
Overview
ENHANCEMENT CAMP
 Enhances learning by providing greater depth, breadth, and
complexity of learners knowledge, skills, and understanding

CONSOLIDATION CAMP
 Provides further practice on and application of previously
taught competencies. Opportunities are provided to identify
links connecting concepts and skills across grade level
competencies
The Materials
• Grades 7 and 8 Lesson Plans
(for both Enhancement and Consolidation)
• Notes to Teachers for Grades 7 and 8
(for both Enhancement and Consolidation)
• Grades 7 and 8 Student Workbook
(for both Enhancement and Consolidation)
The Materials
Structure of the Lesson
Lesson Component 1 (Lesson Short Review)
Lesson Component 2 (Lesson Purpose/Intention)
Lesson Component 3 (Lesson Language Practice)
Lesson Component 4: Lesson Activity
4A: Reading and Understanding the Stem
4B: Solving the First Set of Questions
4C: Solving the Second Set of Questions
Lesson Component 5: Lesson Conclusion
Structure of the Lesson
Lesson Component 1 (Lesson Short Review)
(7 minutes)

A short review of knowledge and understandings

based on the Learning Competencies of the grade and
on the content of the previous lessons
Structure of the Lesson

Lesson Component 2 (Lesson Purpose/Intention)

(3 minutes)
A description of the purpose of the lesson
Structure of the Lesson

Lesson Component 3 (Lesson Language Practice)

(5 minutes)
An orientation to the language and vocabulary to be
encountered in the lesson for analysis in the next
stage of the lesson
Structure of the Lesson
Component 4: Lesson Activity (25 minutes)
 Component 4 has three aspects, 4A, 4B, and 4C.
 It addresses the ‘key idea’ for the lesson.
 It is applying known content to solve non-routine problems.
• This requires students to interpret/understand the ‘stem’
correctly (4A) before answering questions of differing
degrees of complexity related to the stem.
Structure of the Lesson
4A: Reading and Understanding the Stem
Component 4A involves understanding the language of the
stem. The purpose here is for:
• the teacher to model fluent reading of the stem;
• students to read the passage or describe the figure, etc;
•any unfamiliar language (possibly addressed
in Component 3) to be identified; and
• students to hear and experience fluency in
reading the stem.
Structure of the Lesson
4B: Solving the First Set of Questions

• It involves a set of questions associated with the stem.

• All students write down responses or attempts at
each question.
• All students start on the same set of questions at the same
time.
• Time should be used to have student
discussion, explanation, reasoning, etc about the answers.
Structure of the Lesson
4C: Solving the Second Set of Questions
The structure is very similar to 4B. It allows a refresh for student
brain processing as a new starting point. It also allows the class
to become centered around all students starting a new activity.

For teachers, this approach serves two purposes.

• to bring all students back together to proceed as a group.
• to understand and practice activities where different sets
of
questions can be used with a single stem.
Structure of the Lesson
Lesson Component 5: Lesson Conclusion (5 minutes)

• It offers a student-focused wrap-up to the

main intentions of the lesson.

• It helps students reflect on their progress, achievement of

goals, and their performance and understanding during
the lesson.
