LEVERS
A lever is a simple machine that allows you to gain a mechanical
advantage in moving an object or in applying a force to an object.

Levers help us lift loads with lesser effort.

Lever, simple machine consisting of a rigid bar that rotates about a fixed
point, called a fulcrum.

Levers affect the effort, or force, needed to do a certain amount of work,

and are used to lift heavy objects.
LEVERS
To move an object with a lever, force is applied to one end of the lever, and the
object to be moved (referred to as the resistance or load) is usually located at the
other end of the lever, with the fulcrum somewhere between the two.

By varying the distances between the force and the fulcrum and between the
load and the fulcrum, the amount of effort needed to move the load can be
decreased, making the job easier.
USES OF LEVERS
 Levers are responsible for making it easy to lift heavy materials, remove tight
objects, and cut objects.
 Hammer claws are referred to as the common levers which are responsible for
helping you in removing the nails which are embedded in wood or other hard
surfaces.
 Wheel bars are referred to as those which are helpful in day to day life as they
allow you to transport the loads which are found to be too heavy or heavy.
 Tweezers can be considered as the examples of levers which are found in
making it easy to lift or remove the items, even if the items are not that heavy.
 Scissors is found to be one more example of a lever which is found
responsible for using the force in order to cut or separate any of the required
material.
There are three different types of lever
but this depends on the position of the
load, effort and fulcrum.

 The LOAD is the object to be moved.

 The EFFORT is the force applied to move the load

(object).

 The FULCRUM is the point where the load is pivoted.

MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE
 A lever provides mechanical advantage.

 Mechanical advantage refers to how much a simple machine

multiplies an applied force.

 The location of the effort, load, and fulcrum will determine the type of

lever and the amount of mechanical advantage the machine has.

 The farther the effort is away from the fulcrum, the easier it is to move

the load.

Mechanical Advantage = Effort Arm/Load Arm

MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE = 1

Can cause change in direction of Effort

MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE > 1
 Effort Arm > Load Arm = Mechanical Advantage
