Glycolisis

Glycolisis purpose

• to convert energy trapped within glucose to energy available to do

work in cell in the form of ATP
low energy compound high energy compound

NAD+ NADH + H+

FAD FADH2

ADP ATP

Energy Facts

a. each glucose molecule has 2870 kJ/mol free

energy in it
b. it requires 31 kJ/mol to make 1 ATP

c. therefore each glucose molecule can

theoretically make
2870 kJ/mol = 90 + ATP
31 kJ/mol

d. so far, we have made a NET of 2 ATP

2/90 = ~2% efficiency
FERMENTATION
Alcoholic Fermentation
Lactic Fermentation
Alcoholic Fermentation

• Yeast and
bacteria use
this to supply
energy.
Lactic Fermentation
(Microorganism)

• Many bacteria and yeasts

carry out fermentation.
• Yogurt, bread, wine, and
biofuels.
• Lactobacillus species,
perform biochemical
conversions of milk
components.
Lactic Fermentation
(Muscle)

• When
oxygen is
scarce.
• Lactic acid
produce
energy in the
muscles.
• Muscle
