Introduction:

• MMC started as a HIV prevention intervention – 60%

reduce chance of acquiring HIV infection
• Additional benefits include:
 reducing chances of HPV amongst women
 set the platform for a men’s health service
• MMC will be part of a men’s health package of care
• It is offered in a variety of settings – fixed facilities,
mobiles and dedicated MMC sites – majority within the
PHC setting.

Access to the service:

• Service predominantly offered at the PHC platform, NPO partners and

traditional circumcisors

• Launch of Metro Men’s Health Centre on WAD 2020

• Bookings done via telephone, SMS or What’s App

• This makes the service cost-effective in terms of staff utilization for an

elective procedure

• Clients are screened for Covid-19 on arrival

• The service is offered to all clients who come to the site – walk-ins also
accepted where possible

Services offered:

• Client journeys to prep-room for wellness screening:

 Weight
 Urine testing
 Blood pressure
 HGT
 RPR if STI symptoms present, and
 Prostate screening for those over 40 years of age

Procedure Room:

• Medical officer assesses client, obtains consent and

physical examination is done

• MMC will be done OR client is referred or deferred

• Client goes to recovery room for 30 minutes (or longer –

clinical decision) where he is observed, post-op
counselling done, follow-up dates and pain medication
provided

• Client gets a sick certificate for 3 days

Follow- Up:

• Client to return after 48 hours and on day 7

• Follow-up can be at the men’s clinic or the nearest PHC

facility

• Adverse events post-op are managed by the medical

officer
