QUESTION:
How is Binghamton Declining and who is being
affected by it the most?
Background

 Area = 11.14 sq mi
 Pop = 47,376
 Density = 4,516.8/sq mi
 Partially located in floodplain.
 Prior to WWII Binghamton was an economic hub full of prosperity.
 As the Cold War came to a close in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the defense-
related industries in Greater Binghamton began to falter, resulting in several closures and
widespread layoffs at IBM .
 The local economy has been in a deep recession since then.
Current Analysis
 Overall median gross rent has increase between 1990 and 2010. The highest
incomes are located in the Westside and Southside regions.
 Median household incomes have dropped between 1990 and 2010 with many
census block groups having household incomes below $25,000.
 Median home value stayed relatively constant within the Northside an
Eastsides. However, median home values have increased in the Westside and
Soutside.
Current Analysis
Analysis

 In recent years it seems to be that that there is an increase education


attainment of a high school diploma. The highest population percentage of
high school graduates is located around the Westside and Southside where the
percentage of highschool graduates reaches up to 90%.
 Unemployment has increased along all regions of the city excluding the
Westside.
