What is Mother Tongue
 One of the latest
developments in the
Philippine Educational
System.
What is Multilingual Education?

 In South Asia, Multilingual Education


usually follows the first definition,
learning and using multiple languages in
school.
 In other countries, it includes 4
languages; the students’ first language,
regional language, national language
and international language.
According to the official language policy of
the 1987 Educational Act (revised in 2015),
children in Grades 1-3 were to be instructed
in their first language, while those students
on Grade 4 onwards are set to be instructed
using L2.

Recently, the Mother Tongue in the regions
plays an important role especially in the
educational system.
To strengthen this, DepEd has implemented
the use of mother tongue as a Medium of
Instruction.
