NARRATIVE REPORT

FAMILY CHARACTERISTICS
FAMILY CHARACTERISTICS
The X Family comprises 5 members living in the same
household, which makes them a nuclear family. Other relatives of the
family who are not living with them reside in Alicia just beside the family
house and San Guillermo, respectively. These members who lives outside
the family house are from the mother’s side (stepmother and half-brothers)
and father’s side (mother, stepfather, half-brothers) family. X family comes
in contact every day on their mother’s side because they live beside them
and with their father’s side of the family thrice a month. With that, the
means of communication for the father’s side are phone calls and face-to-
face for the mother’s side. The family usually talk to their father through
video calls every day, as he worked overseas.
X Family lived first in San Guillermo then moved to Alicia, prior to
moving to Magsaysay, Alicia, where they currently reside. They have
moved twice in the span of 2 years and spent 14 years in their current
home in Magsaysay.
The family is very close and supports one another with their
needs and desires, through daily conversation and asking how their
days went by. Parents hold equal authority and power over the
family; however, the father is working abroad, the mother holds
authority on the household and manage finances. Older members are
capable of making decisions on their own while the youngest (6
year's old child) relies on the adults most of the time. Their means of
communication with everyone inside the household are mostly phone
calls due to the fact that the head of the family is working overseas.
It is customary for the X Family to discuss major decisions
and welcome ideas that other members have a different
take on. However, it is inevitable to have problems and
arguments. Mother’s patience and proactive approach
resolves arguments/issues. The mother-and-daughters’
initiative typically solve the family problems that they
encounter. Majority of the household chores are
responsibilities of the middle and eldest children, and the
mother takes over if they are unable to perform, given that
they have educational responsibilities to cater.
SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL
CHARACTERISTICS
Tagalog and Ilokano are the languages that the X family uses in their
everyday lives especially the father is Ilokano, with each member being
literate in reading and writing. They have a close-knit group of friends,
respectively. The family is friendly with their neighbors and close to their
relatives.
Family practices monotheism and all of them are Christians. The
children grew fond of religion since their mother worked in the church.
They attend church services together, every Sunday. Although they rarely
participate in events concerning socialization, the family maintains a
good relationship with the community; such as the a member of the
family belongs to a community organization: Sangguniang Kabataan (2nd
daughter).
For leisure, family members usually use their free time to browse and
watch on the internet, and the mother has a passion for gardening. They
are a family of dedicated Christians who celebrates holidays such as
Christmas, New Year, Birthdays and even Harvest Festivals as the family
is religious-centered family.
When asked about their dietary habits, the client said that due to
individual busy schedules, healthy food choices are not prioritized. Thus,
the family settles with canned goods, noodles, frozen goods, and etc., to
satisfy their hunger. In general, the family said they were fine doing fine,
but the mother complains headache when being overworked.
Family hardly ever believe in such folk ailments as well as in
traditional healers as the mother is strictly against these treatments such as
“tandok” and rarely goes to a “manghihilot” due to a fact that she is
raised by a nurse, which is her mother.
In terms of educational experiences, the mother earned her college
graduate (Bachelor of Elementary Education major in preschool),
while the father has a high school diploma, and their children are
studying especially, 2 college student and one in elementary. The
mother previously works as preschool teacher until 2019 and now,
she currently runs a shop which sells various items (works from 7
am – 6 pm) that is close to their home while the father landed a job
overseas as a truck driver in Saudi Arabia. Although the family
receives a good monthly allowance, it occasionally becomes
insufficient mostly during the times where bills came one at a time;
moreover, two of the children are off to college, and with that, the
middle child has a part-time job (during on her senior high year and
1st college year as private tutor on preschoolers and elementary).
FAMILY ENVIRONMENT
House was built with sturdy foundation as it was concrete and it is a two-
storey house as it was just renovated, windows have grills, new roofing as it
was expanded two years ago, as the family inherited the house from their
elders; and has enough space to accommodate and provide personal space for
the members, enough bedrooms (3 bedrooms) for individual except for their
youngest with an estimated measurement of 10x10ft per bedroom but master’s
bedroom is a bit larger compared to others, and has 1 bathroom floored and
walled with tiles, and a living space. The family have access to clean water as
they can afford to provide a safe and reliable water supply as they use faucet;
drinking water was also purchased from a water station thus meals are prepared
for the family and are properly cooked and stored, particularly placed on a
refrigerator.
In terms of disposal, water waste goes directly to their household canal
which is connected to their community canals. Garbage was disposed
through a local truck which picks up household trash once a week as per
order by their local community, the family also have compost pit for
biodegradable waste. The family has a proper and decent comfort room (1
comfort room) as the bathroom is tiled and excreta goes directly through a
septic tank which is more than 20 meters away from their water source.
In terms of controlling vermin and pests, the family is not taking
any actions to eliminate them, aside from owning a cat nothing is being
done to control pests such as mosquitoes, rats and cockroaches even
snails in backyard. The family also has a forest-like backyard, triggering
the growth of mosquitos, cockroaches, fleas, etc., as described by the
client, due to a fact that the client’s mom is into planting.
The family owns a residential house with fences and lives in the
rural area. Their house was located on a hub of the community
where markets, hospitals and schools are within walking distance.
Neighborhood is not overcrowding due to the fact that there are still
adequate spaces in between houses also, there is (1) enough security
as there are no reports of theft, kidnapping or gun firing, (2) enough
lighting as there were street lights installed; and (3) no traffic
patterns as the family does not live near the main road and accident-
prone area. Furthermore, there is no identified pollution (air, water,
soil, noise) within the neighborhood, as the community follows
guidelines in maintaining quietness and no factories are nearby.
FAMILY HEALTH AND HEALTH
BEHAVIORS
The family usually spent the day with the parents working and
children studying and only at night they would meet, talk and eat
together (video call with father while eating during dinner). The
youngest has been admitted to a hospital due to fever and the family
has a history of death from their relatives, the grandparents both
from mother side have passed away due to brain tumor (grandfather)
and rheumatic heart failure (grandmother). The father side has a
history of diabetic but only the grandmother. On the other hand, the
family avoids risky behaviors such as doing risky hobbies like
motorcycle races, and staying outside late at night. The father only
drinks alcohol occasionally (e.g., reunions).
Currently, the mother is overweight which according to the client, makes
her vulnerable to illnesses, as through the BMI she has 28. 11, as her
weight is 70 kg and her height it 5’2. Nonetheless, each of the family
practices self-care and is knowledgeable about remedies to deal with
common illnesses such as taking a tepid sponge bath to ease fever. The
family also take over-the-counter drugs such as ointments and
paracetamol such as biogesic.
The family have access with their RHU and are able to receive
immunization (all of the family member had received COVID-19 vaccine,
and the second child has recently received Hepa-B vaccine) and referrals
as they have contact with community health workers thus aside from
receiving immunization, they can also seek help when someone is sick in
the family from healthcare workers.
