Two or more words that share the same pronunciation but have •

Some homophones are triples rather than pairs such as •

They are a types of homograph that also spelled the same and have
.different meanings, but sound different
:Examples
.Sewer ( pronounced soo-wer), the place that takes away your waste
Sewer ( pronounced soo-wer), the person who replaces your lost

.Desert(to abandon), and desert (arid region)

Some homophones are both homophones and homographs; they sound the same
:and are spelled the same but mean different things

fair (county fair), fair ( reasonable) -
Also the three tiny words, ‘set’, ‘put’ and ‘run’ each has hundreds of meanings
.according to the different contexts of usage
Homophones and Homonyms

We use the term homonyms when one form (written or spoken) has two or more unrelated meanings, as in these
:examples
bank ( of a river) –----------------------------------------------- bank (financial institution)
bat (flying creature) –------------------------------------------- bat (used in sports)
mole (on skin) –--------------------------------------------------- mole (small animal)
pupil (at school) –------------------------------------------------- pupil (in the eye)
race (contest of speed) –----------------------------------------- race (ethnic group)

bank ( of a river) --------------------------------------- bank (financial institution)


.The temptation is to think that the two types of bank must be related in meaning. They are not
Homonyms are words that have separate histories and meanings, but have accidentally come to have exactly the
.same form
