FAMOUS PEOPLE OF AZERBAIJAN

Nizami Ganjavi
Nizami Ganjavi (1141, Ganja – 1209,
Ganja) is a famous Azerbaijani poet and
philosopher. He was born and educated in
Ganja.

Nizami Ganjavi started his literary life


with writing lyrical poems. He wrote a
large collection of poems (divan), gazals
and gasidas.

Nizami Ganjavi is famous with his 5 long


poems called Khamsa wtitten in the form
of masnavi. These 5 poems are:
“Makhzanul-asrar” (Treasure of secrets) ,
“Khozrov and Shirin”, “Leyli and
Majnun”, “Seven Beauties”, and
“Iskandarnama”
Nizami’s poems influenced greatly the literature of South Caucasusian and Near
Eastern nations (Persian, Tajik, Indian, Afghani, Kurdish, Turkman, Ozbak,
Kazakh, Kirgiz and etc.).

His tomb is located in his native city Ganja, Azerbaijan.

His monuments were erected in Baku, Saint-Petersburg and Rome. Institute of


Literature of Academy of Azerbaijani National Sciences and National Azerbaijani
Literature Museum bear the name of Nizami Ganjavi. Today, Center of Nizami
Ganjavi within Oxford University in Great Britain also functions successfully.

With the decision of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, 2021 is


proclaimed as Year of Nizami Ganjavi in Azerbaijan
Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev

Zeynalabdin Taghiyev was born into the poor family of


a shoemaker Taghi and his wife Umukhanum in the old part of
Baku. After his mother's death and his father's second marriage, he
started learning masonry to help provide for his family of seven
(sisters).

By mid-1873 along with two companions, Sarkis brothers, he


purchased land near the oil-booming town of Bibi-Heybat.

The intention was to discover oil. After a while, Taghiyev's


companions sold their share to him and returned to Baku. It was
not long until oil gushed forth from one of the wells in 1877
leading to Taghiyev's instantly becoming one of the richest men in
the Russian Empire.
Taghiyev invested his fortune not only in the oil business but also in many other projects
such as a textile factory and industrial fisheries along the shore of the Caspian Sea.
Taghiyev is also known by azerbaijanis for his charity work. he provided 184,000 roubles to
build the first secular muslim school for girls in the middle east. that school officially opened on
september 7, 1901 and welcomed 58 female students. he helped to solve the water crisis in the
city by helping to finance the shollar water pipeline in 1916. in 1886 taghiyev sponsored the
establishment of a fire department in baku.
He provided scholarships for many azerbaijani youths who strived for higher education in
prestigious russian and european universities.
Haji zeynalabdin taghiyev bought and sent over 300 thousand ampoules of vaccine to pakistan
for preventing rapidly spreading deadly disease. in 1947, after pakistan gained independence,
this fact was included in the training manual of pakistan, and since then the pakistani people
consider azerbaijan a fraternal state and fully support baku's position on the karabakh settlement.
For his outstanding contributions, taghiyev was twice-awarded with the order of saint stanislaus,
as well as with a number of other orders and medals from both russia and abroad.
Heydar Aliyev

Heydar Alirza oglu Aliyev was born on 10 May 1923 in the


city of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan.
In 1939, after graduating from Nakhchivan Pedagogical
School he entered Azerbaijan Industrial Institute (present
Azerbaijan State Oil and Industrial University), Faculty of
Architecture. In 1941-1944, he served as a head of the
General Department of the Council of People's
Commissars of Nakhchivan Autonomous Soviet Socialist
Republic. In May 1944, he was sent to work at state
security bodies. After graduating from the USSR State
Security Committee`s (KGB) Senior Staff Training School
in Leningrad (presently St. Petersburg) in 1949-1950,

Muslim Magomayev
•Muslim Magomayev was a popular singer in the
former Soviet Union. He was born on 17 August
1942, in Baku, Azerbaijan, USSR (now Baku,
Azerbaijan). His grandfather, Muslim
Magomayev Sr., was a renown composer in
Azerbaijan. Young Magomaev followed his
family tradition: he studied singing and piano at
the Baku Conservatory of Music.
•He became famous in the USSR in 1962, at the
age of 19. In 1963 he became known in Europe
after a successful performance at the Youth
Festival in Helsinki, Finland.
•During the mid 60-s Muslim Magomaev made a
very important progress and took vocal lessons
in the "La Scala" Opera Theater in Milan, Italy.
In 1969 Magomaev won the International Song Competition in Sopot, Poland and
also won the First "Golden Disc" at the Cannes Music Festival with 4.5 million of
his records sold that year.

At age 30, Muslim Magomaev was one of the youngest recipients of the highest
artistic title, People's Artist of the USSR. He also received numerous awards and
decorations for his contribution to opera and popular music in the Soviet Union.
Magomaev died of a heart failure on 25 October 2008, in Moscow, Russia, and was
laid to rest in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Lotfi Zadeh
• Lotfi Asker Zadeh was born on Feb. 4,
1921, in Baku, Azerbaijan. In 1931, his
family moved to Tehran in Iran. Zadeh
was enrolled in Alborz College
• In 1942, he was graduated from the
University of Tehran in electrical
engineering. After graduating he went on
to the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology; then to Columbia; then to
the Institute for Advanced Study, in
Princeton, New Jersey; and, finally, in
1959, to the University of California,
Berkeley, where he remained for the rest
of his career. He became Chair in 1963,
and later in the Computer Science
Division (EECS)..
• The world-renowned Azerbaijani
scientist, Professor Lotfi Zade of
Japanese companies such as Mitsubishi, Toshiba, Sony, Canon, Sanyo, Nissan, Honda, and other influential companies produce photo and video cameras, washing machines, vacuum chemical cleaners, cars, trains
with fuzzy logic technology in industrial processes. In 1989, for successes in the theory of fuzzy logic in industry, L. Zadeh was awarded the highest Japanese award "Honda", which is awarded to Japanese scientists.

He is also the author of scientific discoveries that played an important role in the development of world science such as "Theory of Thoughts", "Theory of Systems", "Theoretical Computer Theory" and "Theory of
Optimal Filters".

The US National Space Research Center (NASA) investigates, designs and applies control systems based on these theories. He was a leading NASA and NATO specialist.

Lutfi Zadeh is the only person elected as a lifelong professor at the University of Berkeley.
The world-famous scientist was also elected a member and honorary academician of the National Engineering Academy of the United States, the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences.

The Professor Lutfi Zadeh, died on 6 September 2017 (aged 96), in Berkeley, California, and he was buried in the First Alley of Honorary Burial, in Baku, Azerbaijan.
