 Pakistan’s Tobacco Companies:

Key Findings:
• The two major transnational tobacco companies in Pakistan are British American
Tobacco (BAT) and Phillip Morris (PM). BAT owns Pakistan Tobacco Company
(PTC), a BAT subsidiary.

• Pakistan Tobacco Board (PTB) tends to promote the export of tobacco by export
promotion strategies which entail participating in exhibitions abroad, sending trade
delegations abroad, and participating in domestic exhibitions, which accounts for
awareness and growth for the industry.

• 8 different research projects are being conducted focusing on the specificities of

tobacco production, which account for producing the top quality of tobacco.
 Government Measures
Key Findings:
• The MOH has defined its standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• 1500-2000 model nurseries/plots are also annually laid out on farmers.
• The government ensures that companies like PTC conduct regular field days,
tobacco workshops, and training and visit programs (T&V).
 Indonesia and Pakistan’s Collaboration
Key Findings:
• A bilateral agreement between Pakistan and Indonesia in 2005 includes tobacco as
one of the goods offered by Pakistan. In this annual bilateral trade amounting to
US $170 million, Indonesia agreed to give unilateral concessions on major exports
from Pakistan, including a zero percent tariff on tobacco, among other goods.
