INTRODUCTION
The quality of air in Maharashtra is affected
due to air pollution. The air is polluted more
in the recent years as we are progressing with
technology and industrialization. The rapid
urbanization and increased number of
vehicles on the road also adds to the air
pollutants in the atmosphere.
The air quality of Odisha is no better. The
presence of dangerous pollutants like PM10
and PM2.5 are rising at alarming rates. Cities
like Bhubaneshwar, Cuttack and Rourkela
have seen rapid rise in SO2 and NO2 levels.
They are severely harming the citizens who
can blame only themselves for this situation
CAUSES OF AIR POLLUTION
According to our study, air pollution in
Maharashtra has mostly been influenced by
coal-based thermal power plants (TPP) in the
past. Its capacity is increasing with the
increase in demand for electricity,” said
Abhijit Chatterjee, principal investigator and
associate professor, Environmental Sciences.
In cities like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and
Balasore, the increased movement of
vehicles, construction activities and
population rise are some of the major issues."
In other places, industries, including thermal
power plants, stone crushers, bad road
conditions, transportation of mines etc .
EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION
It said that 1,39,118 people lost their lives in
Maharashtra in 2019 because of air pollution.
This accounts for 16.7 per cent of the overall
deaths in the country caused by air pollution.
The State is second only to Uttar Pradesh
where air pollution took 3.5 lakh lives. The
all-India figure was 17 lakh deaths
Main effects of air pollution in Odisha
include heart diseases, bronchitis and
tuberculosis. A rise in the number of adults as
well as children admitted in hospitals due to
air pollution is being observed.

● Government should formulate more stricter laws which shouldn’t be just there on paper
but also be implemented. It is high time this matter is taken more seriously.
● Another form of action can be banning the use of cigarettes, making electrical vehicles
more cheaper and accessible and fining factories which don’t follow norms.
● The government should make it compulsory for buildings to plant trees in their vicinity
while construction. This might be a small step but will at least be a beginning towards
going green.
