ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

• A brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and

thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry
out the simplest tasks.
• Plaques and tangles in the brain are still
considered some of the main features. Of
Alzheimer’s disease.
• This damage initially takes place in the parts of
the brain involved in memory, including the
entorhinal cortex and hippocampus.
MOVIE BASED ON
ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
GENERAL SYMPTOMS

• Memory
• Making judgements and decisions
• Planning and performing familiar tasks
• Change in personality and behavior
• Preserved skills
SYMPTOMS IN MOVIE

• Confusion with time or place.

• New problems with words in speaking or writing.
• Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps.
• Withdrawal from work or social activities.
• Social withdrawal.
• Decreased/poor judgment or attention lacking.
KIND OF
MEMORY LOSS
EFFECT ON SHORT TERM MEMORY

• Hippocampus is affected in Alzheimer’s disease.

• Alice forgot things she heard, saw or did recently.
• She neglects words, names, arrangements and areas.
• She was not able to store new information in her STM.
LONG TERM MEMORY
EFFECT ON LONG TERM MEMORY

Semantic memory
 Alice has effect on semantic memory as she was not able to categorize things.
 Alice was not able to remember the facts she learned.

Episodic memory
 Alice has trouble in recalling her past events of life.
 She was not able to recall the flavor of ice cream when she goes to that
restaurant where she went a year ago.
CAUSES

• Alzheimer’s disease is thought to be caused by the

abnormal build-up of proteins in and around brain cells.

• One of the proteins involved is called amyloid, deposits

of which form plaques around brain cells. The other
protein is called tau, deposits of which form tangles
within brain cells.
CONT…

• People who had a severe head injury may be at higher

risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
• Your risk of developing Alzheimer’s is somewhat higher
if a first degree relative has the disease.
CAUSES IN MOVIE

• Alice has a rare form of Alzheimer’s and is genetic.

• Her father had Alzheimer’s and was genetically
transferred to her.
• Her children also become carriers of this disease.
TREATMENT
HOW IS ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
TREATED
• Alzheimer’s disease is complex, and it is therefore unlikely that one drug or other
intervention will ever successfully treat in all people living with the disease.
• Several prescriptions drugs are already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) to help manage symptoms in people with Alzheimer’s
disease.
• Most medicines work best for people in the early or middle stages of Alzheimer’s.
• None of the medications available at this time will cure Alzheimer’s.
TREATMENT

• Treatment for mild to moderate Alzheimer’s.

• Treatment for moderate to severe Alzheimer’s.
• Managing behavioral symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.
• Medicines to be used with caution in people with Alzheimer’s disease.
• The future of Alzheimer’s disease treatment.
